Title: lan feedback
Post by: Quick Multi-Task on February 25, 2014, 11:28:30 AM
Hey FITES. Thanks for a great time. You guys work hard and put on a great event.  Thanks for a great time. My only complaint is not really event related. But I think lan gaming is dead .. Friday was great with th internet update issues. I loved the killing floor server and the prprophunt server. On saturday the lan was non existent. When a server would come up I would join but it would only last for 30 min or so I hope you have recovered.

I think the Saturday problem relates more to the tournaments than anything else. Once the tournaments were on and being announced players were heading in different directions and there was always less people asking for announcements about local lobbies.

We can't stress enough that if you want people in a certain game to just ask. We will gladly make announcements to fill it up.

For the record, I offered to do just that.

Also, this is exactly what the ALP was for!  We announced it more than enough times for people NOT to use it.  You can post open play servers that you make.  You can check tourny times.  You can join pug teams....etc etc etc.  Hell, I think you can even post when you are going out to get food.

We can only show you the tools...it's up to the people to use them!

I may be mistaken but I read QMT's feedback as there werent any, or very few, LAN servers Saturday.  I wouldnt know as I dont play source games anymore so I wasnt really checking the browsers.  But thats a different problem than there being servers and people just not knowing about them.  He seemed to be concerned that there werent that many at all.

We only brought the Killing Floor server this year and I'm pretty sure we were kicking ourselves for it.  At one point someone in our group was looking for a CSGO server to play on but there wasnt one available.  I had one back home that I could have fired up right away.  Normally we bring a dedicataed machine for our game servers but I've been trying to sell that machine.  Perhaps thats not the best idea?  Though spending the $ on another seat to power it up is always what makes me think twice about brining it.  The KF server was hosted in a VM on my machine and only went down a few times.  Win8 with built in hyperv running a VM that auto logins and auto starts the server is tits :D

Assuming there IS a server, as pointed out, getting the staff to annouce a server has always been the best way to get a server filled.  We've had great success with it in the past and our 32 man Killing Floor server this year filled right up after it was announced.  In years past it was only set to 16 slots, but it always filled up so I figured 32 would be interesting to try.  Boy oh boy was it ever with 700 specimen  3rd waves.

I was patiently waiting for a feedback thread, but I have some additional feedback that I'll be contacting staff in private with.

My only complaint with the KF server is that you set it to the "Fudge us in the ass" difficulty right away.

With that many people your playstyle has to be a little different.  Too easy to run out of ammo when everyone is kill whoring.  You're shooting at things that people are already killing.  Also staying under that bridge on West London with waves that huge is not a good idea.  Gotta keep moving.

But then again you could always be Decpticon and constantly piss off the flesh pounds making it harder for your team mate (me) who has the cross bow to take them out!

had a great time at my first fites. no real negative feedback to give honestly. there were some issues updating steam games on friday but that was to be completely expected with thaat many people throttling and downloading stuff at once. the staff was absolutely awesome and answered/helped any questions we had, the location was great - being able to go upstairs and crash on-site instead of having to groggily pack up and drive back to another hotel, and the area is very convenient with lots of food in the area (and in the hotel!). didnt expect that big of a turnout for your guys first official dota tournament - 5 teams! we were able to form inhouses when the tournament wasnt going on and at one point had 2 or 3 games going. overall a great experience and i will DEFINITELY be back!

I tried to install tf2 and l4d2, but couldn't even restore from the backups on my server. Steam would always time out. Then I found out there was a local steam server or something? That (slowly) cleared that right up.

Had I not asked another guy how he got his steam stuff installed, I never would have known that. I think there needs to be more communication/announcement about that kind of thing in the future. Maybe a temporary sticky on the forums prior to and during events.

It was WAY more complicated than that. We use an nginx proxy to cache steam updates/installs. But it seems over the weekend they decided that their cloud servers were going to return 403 (Forbidden) at random for only the proxy. I was going to make a reddit post asking if others had the issue, but haven't built up the strength to deal with the incoming dumb from that forum. ;)

What I think alot of people dont realize is that you're at a LAN with 249 other people.  If you need a game, SOMEONE has to have it.  We all know how easy it is to share a steam game.

Our one guy didnt have BF4 installed.  The trick for Origin is that you begin to install the game then quit Origin.  Copy the flat files over from some else then start Origin back up.  Took about an hour and a half to transfer over the network.

If I were running the network I'd be a real a-hole and block traffic going out to the steam download servers.  But... I just like to see the world burn. :D

That's *sort of* what we do (redirection, not blocking), plus some additional secret sauce things that Shoctor can elaborate on if he cares to.
