Title: KB971033 is out today.
Post by: zx2slow on February 23, 2010, 07:16:00 PM
KB971033 comes out today.  This is the phone home check for pirated copies of windows 7 patch that has gotten all the buzz.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033)

This patch will check your system every 90 days to ensure your copy is genuine.  If not you will have functions disabled and prompts to purchase a legit copy.

Its an optional install.  It was released for the 32-bit versions today, the 64-bit patch isn't out yet.

Optional...as in if you don't install it you won't get any more updates until you do?

I read this in the KB article.

"Note Installing this update does not affect the functionality of your operating system."

I LOL'd!

I found this tidbit of info from the Privacy Info link.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/PrivacyInfo.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/PrivacyInfo.aspx)

■For machines running Windows 7, data is collected after the Update to Windows Activation Technologies for Windows 7 has been installed. In addition, data is collected and sent to Microsoft every 90 days even if no activation exploit is detected. However, if the Update to Windows Activation Technologies for Windows 7 finds that essential Windows files have been tampered with, then data collected from that machine will be sent every 7 days until Windows becomes genuine.

It showed up in my Windows Update list of updates this morning, but thankfully, it's unchecked by default, so you shouldn't even have to worry about accidentally installing it. Regardless, I'm hiding the update so it's not offered to me again....until they force you to get in SP1, that is ;)

Yeah, I have legit Windows 7, but you're quickly forgetting all the crap that the last "Activation Update" caused with WinXP. I'd really just rather not bother with it. Take a look at Agent's post in the Funny Images thread (http://www.fites.net/forums/index.php/topic,1650.msg55628.html#msg55628), it speaks volumes of truth, about any "legitimate" digital media.

It will be rolled into SP1, so anyone with a less than legit copy better get some alternate plans before then.  I imagine putting an entry in hosts will be a temp workaround.

Is it really worth getting 7-pro vs. Home premium?

I don't think so. If I didn't receive a free copy of 7-Ultimate, I'd buy Home Premium.

Remote desktop? That's the main reason I bought Pro over Home.

I have been looking at different versions of windows 7 home premium. there are so many different prices for this version. there is the upgrade version, OEM version, full retail version, etc. i want to get it but now i dont know which one to get. maybe it is the lack of sleep from the weekend.

If you 'legally' own a previous copy of windows then you can buy the upgrade version. If you are going to do a clean install with that media, it may require a little finagling. OEM if you planning on building a new computer and selling it. Full retail if you already don't own Windows.
Having said that, it really just depends on how much you want to spend. If you buy OEM and put it on your computer no one will know or probably care.

That will give you the run down of premium vs ultimate, etc
