Internet
« on: May 03, 2010, 07:32:19 PM »
Ok need some input on this.

I have to switch to a business account for my internet so that i can have unlimited usage.

I have 2 choices I can get 15/2 with unlimited service but am locked down like a normal user.

Or i can pay 10 dollars more and have access to running servers as all ports are unblocked but the bandwith is only 6/1.5.

What to do?

Define "locked down" cause technically Comcast doesn't allow it... But well... Shhh.

I can do anything I want with the internet and they will ask no questions as long as its not illegal.
I can run servers and stream video 24/7.

Locked down as in every port I test is blocked. 80 443 everything.
I cannot run any type of server or directly connect to my computer remotely.
I just do not know if having all ports unblocked is worth the cut in download

Seriously?  Why not just stay with home service(other than the cap...do you really use that much?).  Or are you talking for your store or something?

Residential only allows 80gigs a month and I have been using 100-150.
My current solution was 2 accounts and switching modems mid way through the month.
The business plan is cheaper then 2 accounts now that the promotional rate is over.

Its really just a matter of if being able to run a server and do anything I want with the internet without worrying about anything or the faster speed with the restrictions of standard internet use only.

When did it change from 250 to 80?

Id get the faster plan, the bandwidth provided in the plan that allows you to run a server doesn't seem like enough to do so.

Ok looks like the plan was decided for me. Blue Ridge called today and said their business plan only allows for 50 Gigs total each month which is even lower then the residential.  i called PDT and  ordered their 6/1.5 meg service for 110.
The ensured me that the line is not monitored at all and I Can max the connection 24/7.  I will receive a static IP and have the open ports to allow for anything i want. While I hate the speed decrease it is better then going over the 80gig limit again and being banned for life.

SO my next question is since I will have open ports to my router is there any precautions I should take?
I have a router with the firewall and then Windows 7 machines all patched with basic antivirus and firewalls.
Is this enough or should I install an internet security suite or something else?

The router between the internet and your machines should be enough.  Unless you forward ports to a host or toss them in the DMZ you shouldn't have anything to worry about.  Since you have a static IP you can do all kinds of cool stuff with VPN's and what not.  Some of the open source (DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT) give you nifty tools on the router itself.

There are a few websites that will port scan for you.  Or you could ask one of us folks to scan your connection.
