I'm getting FiOS wOOt!
« on: September 22, 2006, 08:13:46 PM »
They are installing the fiber line on tuesday, I can't wait!  Goodbye Crapcast and it's lousy ping's and overpriced service.

Anyone else have FiOS yet?  I'm looking at the 15Mbit/2Mbit package, with a discount for having verizon voice it will be near half what I pay comcast.

It looks like they are running fibre down Trindle Road so I imagine it will be coming to my hood in a few months.

Verizon is running lines thru my neighborhood. I see them installing boxes on almost every telephone pole. Thought according to their availability checker on their website, it still says nada.

I've been doing quite alot of reading up on Verizon's FiOS push. Pretty cool stuff.

Speed Comparisons + Writeup

Installation Writeup

From what i've been looking at, they are attempting to make cable(not just the internet side) obsolete. Verizon has made preperations for additional TV features with fiber. Some laws need to be passed in order for that to happen, but when it does, that will be very very good. Competition and market economics makes the world go round. Great for the us, the consumer.

Going from my current DSL plan: 1.5/768 for $35 to a FiOS 5/2 for the same price is pretty damn nice. main reason the parents didn't go with cable is because of the mandatory TV plan that goes with it. But with the fiber, the extra TV is optional. Meh i'll stop rambling. I'm psyched though.

Thankgod for the MCI acquisition.

The lady at comcast attempted to keep me on their service, she kept trying to tell my that I was getting DSL and giving me a "you are'nt comparing apples to apples" line.

15/2 beats the crap out of 6/1, and the 15/2 is cheaper to boot.  Verzon's ping times beat Comcasts too.  I can't see how Comcast can compete with them other than try to get some laws passed to protect themselves.

Verizon called me yesterday to say they are running a special DSL for $17.99 for a year with a 2 year commitment.  I told them I have comcast and before I could even finish my sentance she hung up LOL!

Verizon is trying to bypass franchise fees to offer TV service, that's the only law stuff they are worried about currently.  Comcast pays it so they should also, especially since Verizon expects Comcast to follow their footsteps when Comcast Voice becomes widestream.

Comcast cannot compete with verizon, they need to drop the crap customer service as well as the price of what they offer.

I have Verizon encore for my phone, for a flat rate that is cheaper than any comcast package I can call all of north and central america.  FiOS starts at $35 a month for 5/2 vs 50 something for comcast cable?

My 1.5/768 DSL was faster than my Comcast cable, my pings are horrible on comcast.  If verizon called me and said I could get DSL it would drop comcast in a second.

I'm too tired to argue right now. Probably no one's noticed, but I haven't been around too much lately because I've been busy non-stop since the 150.

For your customer service complaints, I agree 100%. I don't know about nationwide, but for the two local call centers in this area the turnover rate of the reps is way too high so it's like there is no way for them to ever really learn what they are doing other than the basic stuff they should know before they are even hired.

For your competition arguments, take a look at http://www.keepitlocalpa.com

For your speed complaints, all I have to say is this, taken many months apart, the second one just a few minutes ago:

Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Verizon wants to alter the rules inherent with offering cable service in the state of Pennsylvania and create a new competitive landscape so that it’s easier for Verizon  – and Verizon only – to benefit

That is the point of competition is it not? To benefit yourself?  Verizon offering tv at cheaper prices is good for the consumer, bad for the competitors. Unless, I'm misunderstanding what that site is saying, it sounds like cable "propaganda". But again, I just dislike Comcast for a variety of reasons, hence my quickness in accusing them of evil and unjustice to the denizens of this wretched chunk of rock.

I don't see what the hubbub is about. Hasn't comcast just about holding a monopoly of cable in this state? Verizon doesn't even have the ability to legally transmit. It sounds normal that they'd want to take a foothold in the area. Offers choice.

Enlighten me if I'm missing something. I feel like I am somehow...

Verizon is pushing a bill that would permit them to obtain a single statewide franchise, eliminating the important role of local governments in the franchising process, and giving them an unfair regulatory advantage over other providers like Comcast.

There have been six hearings before committees of the Pennsylvania House and Senate.  At these hearings, Verizon and their "supporters" (mostly thinly veiled front groups) have testified that the local franchise process is a barrier to entry.  They argue that a new law is necessary so they can bring lower prices and bring new technology to Pennsylvanians.

On the other side of the issue, Pennsylvania’s municipal governments; public, educational and government access programming providers; community groups; concerned citizens and others, have effectively argued that the law does not need to be changed.  Local franchising does not slow Verizon down at all, they said, and the important role of local governments in the franchising process must be preserved.

Cable operators like Comcast and the other members of the Broadband Cable Association of Pennsylvania (BCAP) and the American Cable Association (ACA) stand with Pennsylvania's local governments in opposing this legislation.

To date Verizon has obtained 35 local franchise agreements in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties under current law. Additionally, 125 municipalities across the state are already served by competitive video providers like RCN that obtained local franchises under the existing system.  Local franchising works in Pennsylvania!

More than 230 Pennsylvania municipalities, and organizations representing hundreds more, have already passed resolutions opposing Verizon’s scheme, and the list grows every day.

So, in summary, Verizon wants special deals made for them so they don't have to be controlled by the local franchising authorities of the townships and boroughs that would (or would not) get served. A statewide franchise would allow them to pick and choose which neighborhoods to bring service to, predictably ignoring rural and poor urban areas.

Under the local franchising system, typically the agreement that Comcast has with the municipality is that service has to be available to every resident of the community. Also, the municipality receives a pretty decent amount of money in franchise fees that go towards things like police office salaries, snow removal, street repair, and other public works projects. With a statewide franchise agreement, those municipalities wouldn't see nearly as much of those funds, if any at all. For example, I heard from someone at work say that Lower Paxton township gets over 1 million dollars a year from the franchise agreement with Comcast and Lower Swatara gets about 3/4 of a million.

Agent, if you lived out in the country, or in a poorer neighborhood, there is a very, very good chance you would never see any Verizon fiber in your neighborhood, whereas Comcast has fiber running through every neighborhood of every borough/township that we service. This issue is not about preventing Verizon from entering the television market. We welcome them to enter and compete, it will only drive us to become better. But if they want to compete, they have to do so under the same laws as the existing video franchises across the state do, not get special exceptions just because they are looking for an unfair advantage.

Remember, Verizon is a monopoly too. Don't expect them to treat you any differently than the millions of other customers they service. Sadly, you're just an account number to them. I'm not saying Comcast is any better in this department, it just seems you all have this idealistic, the grass is greener on the other side attitude towards Verizon. One thing to remember is that if the grass is greener, it's probably because that grass has a lot fertilizer (aka bullsh*t) spread all over it.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
