Title: How often are the LANparties in York?
Post by: ToBe3D on January 11, 2006, 03:56:26 PM
How often are the LANparties in York?  I have never been to one other than the time when I set up Quake 2 at the office so we could play at lunch, but that didn't last too long:P Wow, I just realized that was about 3-4 years ago    Anyway, I just found this site and wouldn't mind checking out one of your LANs. I live pretty close to that Little People daycare center.

We hold LAN parties every 4 to 6 weeks.  There hasn't been one since early December because of asset allocation for the upcoming 100 man event.  Sometimes the LANs are held in York and sometimes in Port Treverton.  Location of the venue will be on the front page.  More to come on this.

Is location ever a problem? I have a 38' x 38' room with enough 6 foot tables and padded chairs to accomidate 50 people.

Room rental is FREE because its at the New Holland Ambulance building where I work.

The only problem may be that its in New Holland, Lancaster County. Zip code is 17557 if anyone needs to mapquest it.

Pictures of the room as well as measurements (including number of power outlets) can be provided if needed.

Anytime you talk about a lanparty arena.. power is your primary concern.  You have to have a Crapload of power to run 50 computers.  And, I am not sure you can get that many people into a 38x38 room.

what do you mean?   i am not knowing the term clean having to do with power.

but this generator would be able to run the LAN  i am pretty sure 15kw would cover it plus some.  but i might be wrong.

yea,  I've heard that those generators have noise and spikes associated with them.  I've never actually used them but thats just what i've been told.

anyhting that level (bigger than the things you buy at home depot) should have decent regulation. Those are the types of theings they use to power the audio and lighting rigs at concerts (and I can tell you the mics and lights are more advanced than computers)

That would be a really awesome thing for me to get my hands on

check the breaker box, what size breakers are in it.

You would need to know size and number and the layout of the breakers (how many outlets per breaker).

Czar, talk to me sometime.

I should be able to figure out what you have, and power distro can always be brought in to take big circuits and make it into 20a branch circuits.

And where exactly in new holland are you
edit: you're like 10 min from me.

New Holland aint too big :) Jackson Street. 4 houses from the NH Town Park.

Tomorrow at work Ill check out breakers. I know there's atleast 4 breakers in the basement, One of which is about 5 feet high 2 feet wide. Ill get specifics if I can and post a diagram of the available room.

on the breakers look for anything that says "120, 240, or 208"

Okay. Heres what I got. Electricity is not one of my strongpoints (though I would like to learn more)

The meeting room (as we`ll call it) has 14 sets of outlets. The ones marked 2 mean it is one unit with 2 plugs on it. Like a normal house one. The ones with 4 are a unit with 4 plugs in it.

As for breakers: All of them are marked "120/240vAC" with a "20" on the breaker switch. Under the switch before the 120/240vAC is marked 10AC/000

Also from what I can gather, the north wall (facing up in the picture) is governed by one breaker. The kitchen (room on bottom left) is overseen by 4 breakers (!?) two more breakers govern the rest of the room. There are 4 more breakers down there that are marked Meeting Room Lights. Im not sure if the lights are sharred by any power outlets.

If needed, pictures of the breakers can be taken today and promptly posted.

You essentially have seven 20 amp breakers that you can pull from.

You can get about about 5 to 6 units (cpu/mon) per 20 amp breaker, so you are looking at a between of 42 people for this space.  You would also some loss since you would need to run four extension cords from the kitchen area out to the main room.  The loss comes from the rating of and the resistance in the wire.  Would have to be trial and error for these breakers.

As for the lighting, it is highly unlikely that lights are shared for anything else.

depending on layout you wouldn't have to run very long cords from the kitchen, and the loss factor only becomes a major issue after 50ft (assuming you're using 12/14ga cable, which you're crazy if you aren't)

Yeah. Well. The room is available for anyone if theyd like to use it. Since I work at the facility, I can get the room for free. All I ask for in return is free admission to any LAN held there :)

Perhaps 35 people max?

TekieB, the place isnt too far from ya if you wanted to come down and check out the power situation for yerself. Like I said, I'm not educated at all regarding electrical situations. If so, lemme know when, I have access to the building 24/7.
