Holy FRIDGIN Intel C2D
« on: August 12, 2008, 01:43:02 PM »
Intel just released a new C2D over the past week...the E8600. As I'm sure u all know, the E8000 series has been a huge success for Intels C2D line because it's a 45nm 1333FSB cpu that has huge OC'ing capibilities.

However, Intel just released the mother load of C2D  E8600 which features the same as other E8000 series CPU but has NEW IMPROVED E0 Stepping. With the latest stepping, this processor is capable of OC'ing to 4GHZ without voltage changes. Many have gotten this bad boy up towards the 4.5ghz range ON AIR and have reached speeds of 5GHZ and beyond with liquid cooling

Not only is it superior in OC'ing but the stepping makes it that much faster vs normal C2D clock for clock. For example my E6600 was doing mid 14s on super pi @ 3.3 and with the new E8600 with the new stepping, it's doing 12s!

BTW...it's broken the super pi record for the fastest time ever to 1million by doing it in 7.14 seconds @ 6.34 GHZ!

More about this beast can be read here

and here

Let me know what u guys think about the latest Core 2 Duo on FREAKIN ROIDS!

I don 't understand all that technical jargon, but it looks like thats a processor I should look at when getting a new machine next year? :P

If you're getting a new PC next year, maybe you want to watch for the Nehalem's coming out Q4 '08 and into early next year.

Are the Nehalem's initialy going to be single core?  And their new branding is going to be 'intel core i7'

No! Not at all! They will be 4-cores with 8 threads, i.e., multi-core CPU with the return of HyperThreading. AnandTech has a pretty good writeup and even some benchmarks on a very early sample they "borrowed" while at Computex in June. Well worth the read. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3326

This early CPU, frequency locked at just 2.66GHz and running on a very early motherboard sample still beat the fastest Penryn based CPU (at the time) by 20-30% in nearly every bench. This thing is going to be amazing!

My next big question: Will this mean a new socket technology?  I fairly recently just did the whole socket 775 thing and probably won't be upgrading to anything newer for quite some time.

Yes. 1366 pins vs. the 775 you are currently enjoying. Another reason to forgo this C2D to keep your upgrade path clear.

From TFA:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3326&p=3

1366 on left, 775 on the right

Meh..I just bought a new mobo so to me i'll take the best C2D bang for the buck instead of buying a new mobo and everything for the new core..

If u dont need to upgrade then wait, but in my case I need a new CPU now since my E6600 crapped out so this is the best I can get IMO

Welp, that figures!  Hopefully, my 775 technology will last for a few more years before it is completely phased out.

the E8600 uses the 775 socket.  Just look at the mobo they tested it on.  a socket 775.  I think sully might be talking about the chips i mentioned not the E8600.

Yeah, he is talking about the i7 chips.  I knew the eXXXX series are 775.
