So, I was sitting at my computer earlier today minding my own business. Out of no where I caught a wiff of something burning. My computer then started to rapidly make the usb connect/disconnect sound and locked up. I immediatly thought that it was my brand new 500 gig external hard drive. I quickly unplugged it and took a smell of it. Nope, that was not it. I then quickly shut my computer down and ripped the side panel off. I found that the source of the smell had been my power supply. I have not had a chance to look at anything else in the computer, but I hope nothing else was damaged.
Anyway, I just thought I would let everyone know that my computer almost burnt up on me today

I hate that smell :(
just hope your powerbook doesn't explode on you.
edit: sounds like your 5v rail went, as that would do it for the usb connect/disconnect.

Ouch... sorry to hear it bro!
-
What kind of PSU was it?
-
I made the mistake of going cheap with a power supply. I got this (http://www.xoxide.com/500waassuuvr.html) one. It worked fine for a while, but it was still a piece of junk.

Holy crap Aspire PSU's suck, I have a 550w Aspire PSU that had a crazy 12v rail. Aspire dosent even pretend to meet standards.

I had a CD knock out my DVD/RW drive about 3 days ago. Installation of the game went well, then when I started playing. The game was loading and all of a sudden BAM!. I think to myself, "Did it just blow up in my DVD/RW?" Sure enough upon further examination it did. Just had to shake and I realized my fears.
I have the same PSU Bill, now I am worried. Maybe mine will blow up, but it has been in there for a little over 2 years.
-
ahh man. that really sucks.
hows the rest of your computer faring?

Are you going to get it fixed for the LAN?? Oh wait... You haven't paid yet so we don't know if you are going yet. Nevermind.

Hey if you need a DVD drive for the LAN, I loan you one so it wont be an excuse for you not to show  .

Thanks for the offer though, much appreciated to find someone to help a person out who they never met. Anyways I already have a CD/RW drive, I had my DVD/RW drive and that. Used the DVD to play games and CD/RW to rip games and other things which I rarely do. But thanks alot anyways. :2thumbsup:
Its more of the money part then the hardware.

Tib,
sell your soul to the devil for the 25 bucks. Your soul should be worth that much, right?
-
I will buy it for thirty (30)! I am sure I can pollish it up a bit and get somewhat of a return... Maybe I will take it to a Catholic Church and stick it in a confesional..... You know wipe it clean first.... And then you can go to the LAN!!! w00t!

Well, here is the damage report. It is back up and running minus a few things. All of the usb ports and the ps2 ports on the motherboard are fried. The ethernet still works. I have a usb pci card in there, so i am able to get keyboard and mouse. The problem is that my bios has usb disabled on boot, so I do not have keyboard or mouse until I get into windows/linux. I think I might need to buy a new motherboard, but I would rather not have to.

If this would of happened a few days ago there was a great deal on a 700w OCZ gameXstreme that expired.
In the market for a motherboard?

I have a good power supply now (thanks pride).
I am in the market for a new motherboard, but I have an agp card, and I do not think I am ready to upgrade to a pci-e card. So, I am in a tough situation.
