What's the best PC gaming headset now-a-days? I can google for what various sites say are the best, so please don't provide any of those links. I'm looking for personal experience from you or someone you know that really likes a specific brand/model. Price probably not much more than $100 or so. They should have 5.1 surround capability and a good microphone.
This request is not for me. I currently have the Logitech G930's. Although very high-end and good on most days, the problems with random disconnects and popping noises in the microphone can be pretty annoying at times.

Do you want stereo or circumaural (fake surround sound)?
I've used a set of SteelSeries 5hV2's for years. Tried jumping up to the 7h's but the mic was terrible and the audio wasn't as good. I have friends who use the Logitech 931's and they're supposedly fine circumaural headphones, but I'll stick to stereo.
I haven't read anything about the 5hV3's but I can tell you V2's are fantastic and virtually bullet proof.

I know you have the old G930 headset. The new versions don't have that problem. Last set a bought was the one with the new G Series style, they have been great.

The Plantronics GameCom 780's that I won at the last LAN are amazing. I had a logitech surround headset and it didnt work all that well. The Plantonics work great and the mic is the best quality mic I've had among all headsets I've owned as well.
They can go from $40 used to $80 new.

I just picked up the Sennheiser PC 363D 7.1's but they are about $300.

i personally use studio monitors (hifiman he-400) and a desk mic at home, but they are obviously not ideal for the LAN, so i picked up a pair of refurbished steelseries siberia v2's off newegg for $45. so far i am definitely pleased with them!

I just got a set of Logitech G230's (http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g230-stereo-gaming-headset) for X-mas and I must say...they are the best set of headphones for the price in my opinion. 5.1 headphones are a gimmick. Every pair I have ever used did not sound that great and it certainly did not have any sort of surround sound.

I have used these on my PC for quite some time. It's not the greatest headset out there, but for the price, I have been unable to find a set that is as comfortable, convenient, wireless, and beats the sound quality on these. I liked them so much, I bought a set of these:

I read a review about them and the reviewer was at the time also testing the Astro A50's (which are over twice the price, and as far as my personal experience using them goes, have exceptional audio quality) and he claimed he could not find a significantly discernible difference in audio quality.
If I had to pick one between the two, it would have to be the cheaper one. Why? I actually find the cheaper set to be more comfortable, and when I'm wearing the headset for long sessions (whether it's gaming, or watching videos), that matters a great deal to me. While the more expensive set does sound noticeably better, I don't find the difference to be particularly drastic.

I agree with your earlier statement about surround sound in headsets; it just doesn't work. Honestly I often find it makes it sound worse. Even with it only set to "stereo," I find that in games, there is still great directionality. I can often tell which direction the sound is coming from. I find the audio work in the media matters a great deal more than any "surround" capabilities of the headset.

Creative labs has a new headset out I think its priced around $80 and is wireless.

I used a pair of analog Razer Carchias and they are good headsets. If you get Razer headsets I advise that you don't use the Razer Surround utility; as it killed my PCs onboard sound and it's not nearly as good as real surround sound. At a Bestbuy in Charlotte, they are like $60, if you're on a budget go for them.
