Switch to ..uh..whatever the hell you want.

I've been brought up on Windows. From my family's first computer in 1993, A Tandy Sensation 386sx 33mhz 4megs ram system running DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1

I've become dependant on self installing programs, graphical everything, and rebooting constantly. Earlier last year I aquired an old cruddy Pentium II and decided to play with Linux. After trying NUMEROUS distrobutions I settled on Ubuntu. Why? They make it SO easy for a Windows Dependant user like myself to dive right in. Installation is step by step. Very well explained. Just as easy as installing WinXP in my opinion.

And with desktop managers like Gnome and KDE, the desktop feel is more customizable and smoother than XP.

There are some down sides though, wireless networking is SO FREAKIN HARD if you dont have the exact right card/adapter. I did manage to get my WUSB11 Linksys adapter to work but I had to really hunt around for it. - You cant (normally) double click on something to install it. But its rather simple anyways.

Good stuff? Runs faster than winXP usually, dont have to reboot every 10 seconds. Hell, I havent rebooted my linux webserver in my garage for (gets the math..) 22 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes, 33 seconds but i had it well over 3 months once before I shut it down to install some more RAM.

I urge people to play with Linux. Not because of some soapbox speech that windows is evil..but because it is a FREE activity that will expand your knowledge.

Im not anti Microsoft. I do dual boot to XP for gaming reasons.

I have run several versions of linux so far.

I started with Mandrake.  It was actually quite sluggish and a bit too friendly.

I then moved on and tried Linspire (formerly Lindows).  That was ok, but i killed the install by installing the ati drivers improperly.

On the third try, i found a great one.  Debian is currently my distro of choice (or something debian based).  Debian has very good packet management (allows you to easily search for, and install just about any program you would need) and the apt-get command is amazing.  It also was very good with wireless networking.

Right now, my server is running Xandros.  Xandros is a debian based distro that is very nice.

Anyway...give linux a try.

on a side note...Mac OS is sweet too!

I found ubuntu to be beyond idiot proof (for those that don't know me, that is a bad thing (note the slackware))

I love how "reboot my windows machine" is still an argument.  I know that I havent rebooted my Windows XP PC for over a month!  XP never crashes on me (seen 1 blue screen in last 6 months!)

I also have no speed issues with XP.

I would like to venture a guess that the reason that Linux runs faster (so it seems) is that in windows, people install 40 services that run in the background... hp printing, scanning, faxing, email, pdf, etc etc etc.

In linux, those programs dont work, so you dont install them!
Insert witty signature here...

I will agree with you pride, I have windows boxes (namely the ones at school) that have months of uptime, doing hardcore vid editing and photoshop, I also had an xpX64 box that was buggy as hell and was rebooted on almost a daily basis.

In that same note i've seen some mac/nix' boxes running for over 1 year. I've also noted boxes tend to break less (ie reboot) when no one touches them, and a lot of servers don't get touched for weeks on end.

Linux also allows you to boot only what you need, I have dns and dhcp boxes that boot to just a CLI interface, it's all they need, and it saves a boatload of ram not running a gui that nobody will touch

(and i'm moving this to general, as its become an intelligent thread)

i also agree with pride.  My computer has been up for days.  For me it is not "I hate microsoft and everything microsoft sucks!" like it is for some linux/mac users.

Basically i am bored of using windows and i enjoy a new look and feel whenever i can (ie dual booting linux and a mac laptop)

I guess for me, with windows rebooting, a lot of it has to do with updating. I like to keep my comp current. Especially with the XP security updates. Yet, with every (almost every) XP update I need to restart.

I can update an uber amount of linux packages in a row without having to stop and reboot between each one. I can keep my server up to date without having to shut down my customers servers to restart when I new patch comes out for the OS.

Running  a duel boot os of win xp and Suse 10.0 beta 64 bit...Really enjoy running suse, suprised no one else has mentioned it here (bought a distro of debian 64 bit edition but didn't care for the gui support...kde is so much better than a gnome enviroment)

Pride was right by stating the obvious, the only reason uneducated people think windows is slow is because of the background services running that are boggin it down...a few words of wisdom

start - run - msconfig - selective startup - services - hide all microsoft services - disable all

and find out how deep the rabbit hole goes (matrix for those who don't pick up on my dry humor)

On a side note, Linux users should check out FreeCiv, a linux version of Civilization I. (Yes.. 1..the best one)

For Ubuntu users, its included in the multiverse/Universe repositories.
