Title: FITES is looking to buy a trailer.
Post by: Czar on January 27, 2013, 04:51:29 AM: FITES is in the market to purchase a used single axle covered trailer. Do you know of anyone selling one? Or did you see one for sale? Used would be great and our budget is $1000 or so. Some work done on it is okay like painting as we'll put the FITES logo on it anways. No frame damage though.. Below is an example of what we're interested in.

If you guys are entertaining the idea of a military trailer you should try and go direct as possible, www.govliquidation.com (http://www.govliquidation.com). I assume a lot of the fites staff is around the mechanicsburg area given the fites venue, one of the biggest liquidation depots is in mechanicsburg. You could probably get a similar trailer for 1/2 the price of that craigslist ad, we paid less for a mep 003 generator that came on a similar trailer from the mechanicsburg depot. The trailers are fairly easy to enclose, pirates4x4.com and smokstak.com forums have a few guides. Trailers bought directly from the military were never titled, but in PA it is easy to get one.

99% of military hitches are "pintle hooks". The trailer has the hoop and the vehicle has a locking hook, this is mainly because of the robustness vs a typical "ball" connection. Pintle hitches aren't expensive, ~$50, that is one caveat about these trailers, they hold a lot of weight but also weigh a lot empty.
