Are the hitches normally funky military ones?
99% of military hitches are "pintle hooks". The trailer has the hoop and the vehicle has a locking hook, this is mainly because of the robustness vs a typical "ball" connection. Pintle hitches aren't expensive, ~$50, that is one caveat about these trailers, they hold a lot of weight but also weigh a lot empty.
