FAQ:
Q: Why does your new store require registration to the forums?
A:   We have found over the past few events that mail has been an issue for   distributing registration information. So this is multifaceted.
---We   found that emails often got lost or thrown in the junk bin. This system   will notify you via a Private Message and by default this will also   send you an email to the email account you registered with.
---All your order details are kept under your account and you can retrieve your codes/keys/tickets at any time.

Q: Why do I have to create ANOTHER account for seating?
A:   This account is kept on a web server that will be brought to the event   and while do our best to provide a basic internet connection for the   event we know that sometimes the tubes get clogged. Also, the site is   used for not only seat reservation, but allows us to put information   here during the event. The schedule and tournament sign up will be on   this site as well as hotel menus, game and voice server information and   more.

I'd like to, but it's a bit of a drive for me (little over 2 hours), so I'll stick to the big events.
Bumped with tentative tourney list.
Starcraft 2 should work even without a LAN mode. They had a Starcraft 2 tournament at PAX LAN, and they didn't have any problems (though I'm not sure if they restricted internet access to only Starcraft players or something like that, but I doubt it).

Also, the Fites intranet is freaking cool. I can see this being VERY useful during the LAN!

Ok, going forward the direct link in the PM will work. It had to do with it posting the wrong ID.

For the people that already purchased the link in the PM to your order detail page will still give you the correct download for your tickets.

Mostly depends on it getting a REAL LAN mode before the event.

Pretty sure blizzard said they arent going to...but didnt we have decent internet at 200man last year? I dont think it would require a lot to be able to run it.  but anyway was just wondering, would really look forward to a sc2 tourney.

Post by: The Shoctor on October 15, 2010, 02:30:33 PM
I will say it again.

If we can't guarantee a connect for a tournament it won't happen.

We need to create an environment that will be fair and consistent for all players. You would be surprised at how much bandwidth 200 gamers can eat up. Last year the downstream was pegged at 50mb/s for 90% of the event.
Title: Re: FITES 200 Man LAN, FEB 25-27 2011
Post by: Czar on October 15, 2010, 03:55:30 PM
In all honesty, if we could support an online tourney already, we'd have done BF:BC2. Though if Blizzard releases the LAN patch, you`ll see a tourney for that. If no official tourney, then we can certainly heavily recommend/announce structured games but really can't call it a tourney if people complain of dropped connections and what not.
Title: Re: FITES 200 Man LAN, FEB 25-27 2011
Post by: Redmist on October 27, 2010, 10:22:14 PM
Well, like I said, I've heard of LANs having successful Starcraft 2 tournaments despite the lack of an actual LAN mode. I don't know for sure, but I would assume that  Starcraft 2 uses less bandwidth than a FPS. Especially Bad Company 2, with all of that building destruction going on.

I think at the very beginning of the LAN we should run test games to see how it works, and if we don't experience any problems, then a tournament should happen.

How about quake live?

You can certainly play but we cannot offer any official tourneys. If you get enough people to play (we`ll be happy to announce it)  we can run an unofficial tourney and help you keep track of the brackets. But since we cannot guarantee the connection one it leaves our network at the LAN event, we cannot run an official tourney.
Title: RE: Quake Live

How about quake live?

Why don't we just run Quake 3 Arena instead?  It is a LAN game and I doubt it costs more than $5 to get now a days.  Then we don't have to worry about an internet connection.

Quake 3 (at least the engine) was Open Sourced.
I think that they also included the Artwork. (Sounds and Graphics)

If not. Open Arena is free and built on an improved Tech 3 Engine. (ioquake)

If you want to run a private tourney, we`ll be happy to announce it but we can't host an official one because we can't guarantee a smooth connection to the internet servers.

With a private do we still win money..

If we are not hosting the tourney, there will be no prizes provided by FITES for that tourney.  We will only have prizes for tourneys hosted by FITES.

Also to clarify, we generally do not have money as a prize for the tournaments. The prizes for a winning a tournament are a trophy and the satisfaction of being the best team/individual there. I can't remember if we also let you pick something from the prize table or not. The items we receive from sponsors to give out as prizes are done more like a raffle, giving everyone a chance to go home with something, not just a few dominant players in the tournaments.

As for the rooms, the hotel ownership (and affiliation?) is changing as of today (Jan 1), so the best thing to do at this time would be to:

Quote
-=OR=- Call the hotel front desk (717-697-0321) try to get someone on the phone that is local to The Holiday Inn Harrisburg West.

There may be some things in transition as the ownership change takes effect. I drove by there Thursday and saw they were changing the sign out front, so I don't yet know what they're going to be called. The hotel is supposed to be supplying us with a new direct reservation link to use going forward, but we have not received that link yet.

Happy New Year!

Depending on how generous our sponsors are it very well could be the case.  At previous events we will raffle off prizes to attendees, we give out trophy to tournament winners.  I think tournament winners also got an additional raffle ticket.

Our group is really more about having fun and playing video games than competitive play.  We have competitive players and tournaments but we aren't focused solely on it.

Now that the Holiday Inn is gone and the Park Inn is ... in... you can order up the "Party Like a Rock Star" room package (that sounds more exciting doesnt it?) for your stay.

This includes and is limited to:  Overnight stay, 1x - 6 pack of beer and bucket of wings in our restaurant-Legends Sports Bar & Grille, and 2 breakfasts in the morning.

I love marketing people..... hahah

Remember to make your http://intranet.fites.net (http://intranet.fites.net) accounts!!

I see we have a little over half the people signed up with accounts... You need this account to make your seat reservation and during the event to make teams for tourneys.

Hey guys. Typing this for the second time since the Verification image was blurry, and I hit request and lost my entire post.
Hey, newbie here. So I caught wind of this LAN from a gamer buddy of mine and I'm very interested in bringing a few friends and playing and meeting new people and what not!

But I've had a few questions arise and I'm not certain how to go about getting them answered. Should I post them here so that others who have the same question can read some answers? Or should I PM/Email a moderator and ask questions that way? Before I'm directed to the FAQ, I've read it :). Hopefully bringing like 6+ people, so it won't be a waste to answer my questions <3.

Got a Q about the LAN this year.  You guys still having the rock band stuff set up?  And if so are you still using the games drum kit?  If you are interested I can bring my ion kit. It works great with rock band, guitar hero compatability is a bit wpotty and the J5 box I tried to make is a bit unreliable.  But it's very nice for rock band. snare, 3 toms, 2 cymbals plus hi hat, and real double kick bass.  Just let me know.

I also had a question.  Unrelated to the ION kit...although that does sound bad ass as I am a drummer and might want to give it a try :)

My question is regarding Ventrilo.  Will ports be opened up on the network to allow connections to outside Vent servers for the tournaments?  Not a huge deal because I could just host one locally from my machine, but I was just curious.  Last time I went in 2009 it was opened up I believe.

It should be open, but we have a 512 person TS3** server at the event.

**Disclaimer: I do not work for any company that deals in VoIP technology, but I have a DEEP hatred for Ventrilo's Licensing bullCrap. You can run your own little 8 person... But if you want more you have to rent from a company. So I thought at one point we could get our act together and purchase a license... NO! You have to buy at LEAST 1000 seats and PROMISE to buy MORE every year!

Not to mention that Teamspeak 3 is a superior product.

Post by: gri3v on February 15, 2011, 12:10:54 PM
Yeah I have both TS3 and Vent and use and like them both.  Back in 2007 I started renting out a 10 man Vent server for RN Gaming, and then recently I purchased a lifetime 10 man vent from NationVoice for 100 dollars.  I have had no problems with them, but after reading what you posted, that is pretty shady about Vent.  Very true that we could just use your TS3 server, but for private channels and that kinda stuff, figured it would probably just be easier to use ours rather than bug someone else about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the attendees also be able to create their own private channels on the TS3 server, so if they want to have a private one for their team they can do so.

If I'm wrong, delete this post so as not to cause confusion to later readers of the thread.

You are correct!
They can create and password their channels.
And only event staff would be able to access your channel if you have password protected it. And even then I believe it is all logged so if there is any tomfoolery please inform us and we will take care of it.

With regards to professionalism.. I will not be wearing pants for at least 10 hours of the 40 hour event while I'm on duty/on the floor. So there.

I 2nd this statement despite paying for a vent subscription myself. TS3 supports a higher voice rate and doesnt limit you on users which makes it tits vs vent. If it wasnt the standard in the Worlds of Warcraft, I would of canceled my vent subscription months ago. They can thank WoW for keeping them around for so long

So I take it this will be the last time we are at this venue? I mean once the women see you rainforest........

I remember looking back in the old pictures when you wore a kilt to one of the parties. I mean a LONG time ago.

The kilt was 2006. And he wrestled Xankriz while wearing it. Talk about concealing his manly parts!

Yeah, but I have switch to Cargo shorts at events... No matter the time of year you can always use more pockets! Also it has a tendency to get warm around all those computers. Also... Pride always wore the cargo shorts. I do it in memory of him...

(He's not dead FYI)

Will game update files be available at the LAN?  If not, on non-steam games what versions are the tournament games at for patches?

ZX Will have a file server available to grab patches should you need them. Looking down at the tourney list and off the top of my head

CoD4 - 1.7
UT2004  - 3369
UT3 - 2.1
CS:S and L4D 2 are auto updated on steam

Notable Mentions

BF2 - 1.5
CoD2 - 1.3
C&C Zero Hour - 1.04
C&C Generals- 1.08

Cant think of anything else relevant at this time. But then again if you're curious about another game there's always google so :-)

I'm sure you'll be able to find even non-tournament game patches on DC++ a the LAN. How do I know? I'll be sharing my huge patches folder, as well as my Steam backups folder  :2thumbsup:

Hey guys,

I wanted to let everyone know that MLG (Maryland Lan Gamers) was playing Call of Duty 4 Modern Warefare and Call of Duty Black Ops in LAN mode. We didn't have to have internet access (like you do with BFBC2) to play against each other.

Also,

for any Star Trek fans out there. I have found a way to play Star Trek Legacy with the Ultimate Universe mod in LAN mode. BUT..this has to be done with XP. So, if you have a dual boot system or a computer with virtual XP this would work..AND..it's a kick ass game. I think I would have all of the necessary files but I'll tell you right now it's a few GB worth of files.

I tested this with Merlin of MLG at the MLG LAN this past December.

A few other things. Ultimate Electronics in York, PA is closing. They are in their 3rd week of a liquidation sale. I got a copy of Call of Duty Black Ops for 30% off (normal price $60, I got it for $45.00)

I also saw a new version of the flight sim " Lock On " at Best Buy in York, PA the other day. It's $29.99 and it's been updated with some newer planes and to work with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Here's a youtube video for this new game and it looks pretty good.

Wait... UE is ALREADY closing? The one across from the Galleria? Holy hell, that was quick. I think I'll stop in there before the lan, just for giggles.

Just a friendly reminder to make sure your Windows Updates, virus scanners and firewalls are up to date.  Your user-accounts have strong passwords, you aren't sharing any folders you don't want to be shared with everyone else.

Update all your games (Steam just released a big update today for the steam client as well as a bunch of games).
