Fire Daemon - Any Of The Server Gods Use This Beast??
« on: February 02, 2008, 05:19:48 PM »
I'm not sure if you remember Jon (Nitro) or not but he has this small comp repair shop over in Columbia. Anyways, he and his partner have decided to throw monthly lans. Nothing huge, just like 6-8 people at a shot

Anyways, I've been elected to configuring the network (which is just DHCP server, Teamspeak which I already did, YNHub for DC++ affairs and Games)

I've come across File Daemon which I've found is really really nice handy tool for dedicated server launches. I've been working at this now since around 1 and so far I'm very impressed. Before finding this, I would launch dedicated servers for UT and such off batch files which worked ok.

With FileDaemon, I'm able to make services which can be used to setup dedicated servers and launches. I've made stand alone services to launch CoD 2 CTF, DM, and TDM along with UT DM, CTF, and TDM (with UTComp mod and instagib add ons)

I'm currently working on Fear MP then later CS:Source (with the Zombie Mod Add On when I get the chance to read into it)

There is so many options you can do with this program its insane. You can launch with a dedicated core (for dual core setups) exec commands on launch and close, dedicate individual cfg files for each service (like my CTF has a dedicated CTF.cfg file for CoD2 which allows custom setup for map rotation and so fourth)

Anyways, not to bore you on the subject, but it's a VERY VERY nice and useful app that allows a lot of customization. If your a server guru and haven't heard of it before, give it a DL.

This would be great to get our game server admins to use for the lans!

Thats why I posted it here. So you guys could take a look at it and maybe help keep things more organized or running smoother during LAN's.

As you can see from the screen shots...I have a CoD2 CTF match being launched with this setup now. The bottom line with the parameters sets the server to use the CTF.cfg file for settings along with setting it as a dedicated server on launc and some other things. I'm sure you can imagine so much more you can do (prelaunch bat or cmds before launch or after shutdown of the server, cpu priority and so on)

The forums help out a good bit as well at first until you understand everything better

**Decided not to go with it for FEAR though but instead to just create custom txt configs for each game type. FEAR is the one multiplayer server that has a nice gui to run off of (it gives you the choice from launch on what cfg to chose, game type and switching is a very easy GUI setup which makes Fire Daemon sorta pointless to setup)

I first was exposed to FireDaemon around 1999 (wow, was it that long ago?). I used to use it to run SETI@Home as a service all the time, and then later I used it to run a ventrilo server when I played EverQuest II.

I know FireDaemon makes it really simple to create services and manage them through their GUI, but eventually I just transitioned into using what Windows provides natively through the command-line. The "sc" command is pretty powerful if you can master it ;)

The Windows Resource Kit also contains some tools to create Windows Services (Instsrv.exe and Srvany.exe). Once a service is actually created, you can configure it any way you like through the Services Management console. In the end, you can use whatever you're most comfortable with. FireDaemon certainly makes it easy, but if you know how to write batch or vbs scripts, you can do just as much (actually more) as FireDaemon does.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
