Title: FIOS HO!!!
Post by: Mr.Tibbs on December 19, 2006, 10:42:57 PM
Yep getting the goods on Thursday, mom got the fastest speed 15MB. They say it will take about 4 hours, 6 if you are wanting to include the TV. Now can anyone explain to me how this stuff works. All I know is now they are using fiber optic cable to transfer data. Tell me what kind of equipment is involved. It says in their description that they are also going to stick a generator in my house just in case things happen. Tell me someone I am confused as hell. O and should I take off work that day, just so Verizon doesn't mess with my system. Mom tells me that I would need to put a certain thing in my computer to get the stuff to work.

Always <3 your mother. She was all like well for what we pay now for verizon dsl. We could get FIOS and pay as much as we do with dsl. So I was like I am not complaining.

From all of the articles I have read concerning verizon FiOS, they install a grey plastic box
(http://www.bricklin.com/17009e10.jpg)
on the side of you house for the outside maintenance. Then, there is a battery backup that is placed on the inside of the house,

Then just connect to your router.

Verizon does offer to set up your network, though you can request to have them leave it alone(if you know what you're doing). I've had friends in connecticut receive FiOS already. You don't need to install anything special into your computer if you've already had a previous broadband connection.

I've posted these links in the past, but I'll post them again here for posterity. Very useful to know exactly what you're getting yourself into.

Now I hope they hook up the lines that have been tantalizingly hanging out in front of my house for the better part of 3 months now. I'm gettin' antsy.

EDIT: Scratch that. Just tried the verizon on-site FiOS-checker-ma-thingy again, and it says it's available here. Bastages didn't send me an e-mail!   :cussing:

as long as you have a connection coming in your router should be able to provide the logon credentials to get the service up and running.  Just match the connection parameters from your computer to the router and make sure you put your home computers on a different subnet than your modem connection (ex. modem on 192.168.1.1  comps on 192.168.2.1)

I think i figured it out, you have to be registered with verizon to get the wireless stuff. The guy never signed off on anything, he just got up and left when he couldn't figure it out. asshat

Throwing out insults about verizon technicians on a public forum won't do any good. You didn't bother to follow-up on the matter or inquire about it?

It is hard lined at the moment. I got one at like 9 last night after going to circuit city. Met with bill and he suggested a usb wireless connector. Took it home thinking it would work. Nope

My point is this he didn't do his job. He never told me aht he was doing at all. I had to ask him about the battery backup. Verizon techs are suppoed to explain everything to you. He never did, if he couldnt of gotten it to work all he had to do was just hard lined it. Like I did, then come back and give it another try.

I somehow doubt that their job entitles them to explain every single thing they are doing to the customer while they are working. I'm sure that most people have to ask the technician. They few times I've had a verizon tech come over to my house he only explained what he was doing when I either asked him, or needed info from me and told me why he needed it.

I don't trust techs that come to my house! If they ask to touch my computer I tell them to GTFO!  Just ask those third party Comcast bastages! It might be a different story if they were actually from the company that is supposed to be servicing my equipment but they are just TSP asshats that don't deserve Crap from me.

I asked some people at work if they thought it an accurate statement that 95% of the problems in our system are the result of lazy or incompetent contractors and they agreed without hesitation. I'm not saying they do it wrong all the time, but that if you do have a problem, it's more likely to be a caused by a contractor than a regular employee.

Yeah the in house support has been great, but the people that come to your house are usually the contractors. I only got an offical Comcast person once cause I raised HELL!
