Then I stand corrected Sully...How well did the movie compare to the book? Did it follow it fairly close or did they Hollywood it like directors always do.

Both of the movies followed the book (and radio adaptation of it) loosely.  Nothing is ever as good as the book, but the movies weren't bad.  The radio broadcast of it in 1938 actually had a lot of people believing that it was real and we were being invaded.

Yeah that's why I lost interest in Crysis vs Farcry. At least with farcry I could get into the whole storyline about genetic mutation. It's a complete turn off to me when you build up a huge plot and then the big questionmark at the end of the tunnel turns out to be something like aliens...

Kinda like the "Thank you mario but the princess is in another castle." ending??

Kinda like the latest Indiana Jones ending...

Ok... played Far Cry 2 for about 2 hours this morning. I am already beginning to see that I am going to love this game. Actually the game feels like a first person GTA-type game. Feels a whole lot closer to GTA than any other game that I could compare it to.

Free roam, free mission collecting, safehouses (and safehouse upgrading), an arms dealer, form alliances, find secret items and locations in the open world, side missions, etc etc. Feels exactly like a first person GTA. And it's pretty damn fun. Not to mention that it looks and runs great!

I just started playing it. I really like it; I have done a few main missions and a side quest. I have found about 7 briefcases. Took me awhile to figure out the diamond finder.

i just started playing.  Haven't gotten very far, but already, i'm having to get used to it.  Coming from playing crysis with all the abilities to cloak, jump real high. go real fast... it's taking some time to get used to the pace.  The fact that you start out ill amplifies the slowness since you can't go very far or run very fast without being overcome.

Also, i haven't enabled the widescreen hack yet, but right now, i feel like i'm playing on a 640x480 screen (i'm running 1680x1050).  The reason why i say that is that i feel that my field of view is extremely constrained.  Trying to use the map really makes this apparent...  you can barely see anything in front of you while it's up as it blocks the whole view.  So you are always having to switch from map to regular view to find the diamonds or whatever they want you to look for.

It's nowhere near as beautiful as crysis or the original farcry.  The color pallete is very brown.  Everything has an odd matte texture or feel to it.  The music is great.

Finally, they say that everything is open, yet very near to the beginning, one dude says you should check out Mike's Bar.  Well, i go there but the game won't let me go in.  I have to buy a weapon first in another building, then it would let me in Mike's bar.  With them saying you can 'go everywhere', it seems a little odd that something like that would scripted.

Just some early observations.  I'll keep playing and see how it goes.

It feels a whole lot more open than many other games. Open to the point of Oblivion anyways. I didn't come across that scripted situation, prolly because I went into the weapon shop first anyways :P (I wanted my guns!)

But everything else has been very open and non-linear.

I have put a good 3-4 hours into it and here are my first impressions:

It looks really good (not as good as other games) but I can run it 1280x1024 at full settings (except AA which is 2x) and it never drops below 30fps.

The weapons, which I have only used about 4 or 5 are decent.

The open world is nice, but very tedious to drive for 30 minutes to get where you need to go.

The fire dynamics are pretty amazing!  Drop a molotav cocktail and just watch the grass and trees catch on fire.  Although they say that the fire reacts naturally, which it does except that it burns itself out at set time it seems.  I had a huge brush fire going and it definitely had more places to go with the wind kicking up but it just died off.  I guess the engine has it's limits.

AI:  Not that good.  I sat there in a 'camp'  with 3 guys just staring at me.  ANd they were definitely enemies.

The missions seem a little too repetetive so far.  I felt like I was killing the same three guys through out the first 3 missions.

And I had the same issue as nstuff where I had to go to the bar but it wouldn't let me until I went to the arms dealer, which it didn't really tell me I had to do that.

One thing that I really like is the buddy system:  There's one guy you meet near the beginning of the game that if you 'die', he comes and picks your ass up and carries you away from the action to heal yourself.  THe whole time you pass out and wake up intermittently and see him blow some guys head off as he is carrying you.  That's pretty neat.
All in all, it's a good game, just doesn't live up to the hype that everyone has been giving it.

Since some of us have it, I want to try and get a Hamachi game going.  I really want to try the multi, but as I have a 'questionable' version of the game I can not with out the help of my friends!  *hint hint*

I think I'm going to forgo the side missions. Did about 4 of them and they were super repetitive, but the main missions were pretty fun. The only side missions worth doing are the gun shop ones.

As for the long transportation times, you can also use the bus stops to get across the map faster. There's one in the main center city (around the edge... looks like a bunch of map signs in a U), and at the bus icons around the map.

So I buckled and bought the game (looks like I'll be eating ramen for a bit) and I have to say, I'm impressed.  Put about 3 hours into it so far and to be honest, the whole open-world thing sorta feels gta-esque. Instead of doing the main missions, I've stuck to doing the weapons missions for now and unfortionately, they do feel somewhat repetitive.  For how good the game looks, it sure as hell runs smooth though.  I've got it at 1900x1200 cranked everything and it looks suh-weeet. Oh, and /agree about the fire animations, look awesome.  It is somewhat annoying to have your flamethrower jam up on you in the middle of a crucial encounter and actually damage YOU instead of the enemy, but the weapons wearing down over time is pretty cool and you actually don't have to worry about it if you just buy the weapons.  Just pick up a new one when ya get the chance :D

You still have to worry about weapon degradation if you pick up the new ones, they just don't degrade as fast, and you can buy reliability upgrades for the weapons.

Yeah I should invest in that. I was in a firefight with a AK47, and the damn thing exploded. So I went around trying to find a damn weapon and I picked up a motherfudging shotgun. And yet I could still shoot the guys from like 30ft away and still kill them.

And I am also running it at 1920x1200 with everything on with no AA and it is still playable. Although it did crash to the desktop last night when I was playing it. I am sure they will resolve that with a patch. But that was after about 4 hours of play. I might pick it up closer to the lan. I am playing the game by other means.

Interested to see how the multiplay is. It has an experience and weapon unlocking system like COD4, so might be a little interesting at least. Saw from the reviews that you have the ability to revive team mates as well. We'll see.

I hope they do it similar to ET where you have a 30 second spawn delay to wait for someone to revive you.  Republic Commando did something where you had to be revived by a squadmate and you only lost when all 4 squadmates were incapacitated.
