Title: Dell XPSs
Post by: llDayo on August 29, 2006, 12:06:29 PM
I was wondering if anyone here ever went through Dell and put together an XPS system. I was browsing through their site and putting together some samples and it seems you can put together some really nice systems for a decent price. It would be easier for me to afford something like this with monthly payments instead of splurging a few hundred here and there to upgrade piece by piece (easier to budget with a steady payment). It looks like they have dual core, Raids and SLI options which is definitely the way I wanted to go.

Any users out there that could share their experience and whether it was worth it?

All I have to say is  :puke:...:puke:...:puke:...:puke:...:puke:

Actually I have a little more to say.  During my time at Circuit City, I saw many of a computer come through our tech bench.  At any given time, 85% of the computers on the bench were Dells.  From what I have seen, the software is bad, the hardware is worse, and the tech support is horrid.

Well, according to their site with the XPS line, software isn't necessarily included (except FreeDOS). These are more for people who like to tweak and install their own computer components. So the software isn't an issue. As for the hardware, what exactly was the most common problem? Also, why were most of them Dells? Did it have anything to do with what brand CC mostly sold? Having most of the same brand on the repair bench doesn't necessarily mean that brand is bad.

I know from experience here at work we switched to Dell from Gateway a few years ago and haven't had many major issues (and I'm talking several hundred computers).

With Dell now you can choose to not get an OS which is pretty nice, like you said.  I think the fact that most of the computers we work are dells is significant.  Most of the time they have hardware problems (dead mobo, ram, hard drive, psu, etc.), and the reason we get them is because dell will not replace anything for them.

10 years ago when I was runnin a network in NJ, we had a bunch of Gateways and started to make the switch to Dell when I was leaving.  I thought the Dell's were 200% better then Gateways.  I had alot of hardware issues with the Gateways, but not the Dells.  Altho, they were newer so one would expect that.

I have never owned one of my own and this was limited to about 20 dells and 15 gateways (for what its worth).

billabond1, they do have a 1 year parts warranty for the XPS. I couldn't ask for anything much better than that. If something is wrong with a part you'll usually find out within the first couple of months, IMO. And since these are put together by the consumer, I can switch a part out for a spare lying around.

cuzznkev, my mom just got a new Dell this past weekend that I helped her select what she wanted (hence the reason I've been looking at their site) so I can see how well she does with it. My in-laws also have Dells as well as a friend of mine and so far no one's had any problems. I mostly interested on how well the XPS probably performs. I guess I'll go looking for reviews out on the innerweave.

I agree with both billa and cuzz.

Gateway is worse than Dell. But that doesn't mean that Dell doesn't suck. That sure says alot for Gateway doesnt it?    :snicker:

yes, Cow SH*T is worse than Dog SH*T, but, they have something in common......there are alot of small buisnesses that rely on solid hardware to keep things going....in York, there is Hi Tech York, in Harrisburg, there is Tron Net.....Dell, Gateway, E-Machines, they all started out good, but ended out crappy....Gateway was a small computer building buisness in a Barn....thus the cow logo...many others simular....in the end they all signed contracts with AOL, and other mass legal spyware companies...you get the point....if you know how to build it, do it, get a Newegg Credit card or whatever, I know companies like Hi Tech York can get financing, suckit up, buy something worth while, but don't ask for free tech support when your dell goes to hell and your 1-800 number goes to India....

Oh Btw...the cases suck too....

Sparticus, can you give me some details on this Newegg credit card? I didn't even know they had them! Is the interest high?

http://promotions.newegg.com/NEPA/PA06/index.html

Should be noted that it doesn't really look like a CC. It looks more like a line of credit with them...

Thanks for digging up a video that is old... I MEAN OLD. Since then the OS has been through 5 revisions...
So you are telling me that at the same time this video was made a lot of people where "happily running" WindowsME? And lets see... Are you comparing the hardware or OS? I thought we were talking hardware here....

A Properly configured Windows ME System will never crash, and is more stable than any other OS  before XP...

-2 points for taking this way off topic...

Any luck with your shopping dude?

Well, I'll probably go with Newegg. Comparing prices, I just can't reasonably see any reason to go with Dell. I'd be paying almost twice the worth and probably for inferior hardware. Thanks for the help guys! Now I just gotta convince the wife to let me do this (that's the hard part, hehe)
