I just got off of the phone with my enhanced business salesperson at Comcast... asking him about when the speed increase goes into effect.

He said, its already done.

It will have a trickle down effect...

1st - Residential, go from 4 MB to 5 MB with the option to pay an extra $10 for 6 MB

2nd - Business, go from 5 MB to 8 MB and an upload speed of 1 MB!!!

lmfao if comquack said that, it means this.

it is going to take months maybe even years to see the faster service. and when it is faster it will still be just as unreliable.

I heard a rumor from a tech at Verizon that the fibre to the home project will start in Hampden Township somewhere. He wouldn't tell me where but for anyone that does not know what this is its Verizon running fibre optic right to a box at your house with speeds in excess of 30mb. Each "hub" per street section (32 houses max) will host 50gb of bandwith. Thats gig not mb. He didn't know what the pricing was but I put 2 and 2 together and came up with "Going head to head with Comcast to offer cable and internet".

Yes, current talks abound about the cable companies and phone companies going head to head in a triple play or quadruple play scenario.

Phone companies (already offering traditional phone service, DSL internet, and some with cell phone service) are looking to add television service in the near future.

Cable companies on the other hand (already offering television, Internet) are starting to offer telephone service too. Comcast calls it "Comcast Digital Voice". It's essentially VoIP, but done a little differently. For example if the power goes out, your phones will still work (unlike Vonage for example). It's been rolled out to test markets in a few places already and plans are to have it nationwide by early next year. Harrisburg markets won't be until 2006 from what I've heard at work.

Verizon's FIOS service...you can get that 30Mbps, but it will cost you plenty.

Last month Brian Roberts, Comcast CEO, said that he foresees 100-200 Mbps residential service in the not too distant future, but we'll have to wait for the DOCSIS 3.0 spec to be finalized.

Bottom line is competition is only going to heat up between the phone companies and the cable companies. That just means we the consumer will win out in the end.

And VonDouche, power cycle your modem on or about July 27th and you'll have the new speeds.

Can you get 100-200mbs through copper coax lines? As for cost for the 30mb from Verizon I'm sure it will be more than what we pay for Comcast right now but I don't imagine it being like $150 a month. I would guess the prices would be around $50-75 a month. I'd pay that much for 5x the speed of Comcast. I wonder what the upload speed will be?
