Check your vote!
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:18:00 AM »
With the new electronic voting machines being prone to hacks and other mischievous acts: please please PLEASE!  check your vote against the printed hard copy after you cast it.  The polling locations HAVE to allow you to view the hard copy of your casted vote.  They say that the touch screen calibration is to blame for mis-casted votes (in some cases according to what this video just did).

Watch the end when he casts 'all republican ticket', he calls the error a mis-calibration but since no one touched the individual locations for the individual votes, there is definitely something wrong.

With the election coming up in less than a week, voting machine security (or the lack thereof) is critical, especially with the popularity of early voting this year. While we’ve previously discussed voting machine insecurities, it looks like the problems haven’t been fixed, and in some cases, it’s escalated. Voters in states like West Virginia and Tennessee have complained about voting machines “flipping” their votes, even after they were recalibrated as in the video above. Voters have been advised to avoid voting straight Republican or Democratic tickets, to avoid the likelihood of their votes being flipped. What if you actually do want to vote a straight ticket? Video the Vote is an organization that advises documenting as much of your voting process as possible. Other ways you can protect your vote include voting absentee so that a paper trail is available, and refusing to accept provisional ballots, which are often thrown out. After seeing videos of ROM swapping and finding out that the locks can be opened with hotel minibar keys, we’re waiting to see what’s going to fail this year… and voting absentee.

That video doesn't show anything but a touch screen that was calibrated incorrectly.  At the end when he votes the straight republican ticket he had already voted for Ralph Nader before he did it so it didn't change that selection.  That is a coding issue and I believe the warning he clicked through stated that it wouldn't change selections already made.  If you are touching one place but it is registering somewhere else yes you do need to alert someone but as he showed it is a 20 second process to recalibrate the machine.  This is just democratic fear mongering that the touch screens will steal your vote and give it to the republicans.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

He clearly states 'I vote straight republican' .... 'Ralph Nader shows up.  It's out of calibration.'  So he re-calibrated it and it seems to work fine, but he voted straight republican and Nader shows up?  If there was a warning, then this guy should have said 'This won't change your votes you have made already unless you go in and change them'.  He seems a little mis-informed if that is the case.

Look, the whole point of my post is to MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR VOTE!  I didn't want to start an argument here.  I am not mongering fear.  I could care less who you vote for, but in the end make sure you are really voting who you want to vote for.
