Title: Cheap Win8 upgrade
Post by: vincegun on July 03, 2012, 08:10:18 AM
I'm sure you've all seen the news do the rounds, so I figured I'd start the topic. Will you be taking advantage of the cheap upgrade to Win8? I'm sure the "upgrade" will be just to the basic edition of Win8, but will that matter to you knowing that there'll be 4 editions - Win8, Win8Pro, WindowsRT and Win8Enterprise?

There's also this: "In addition, LeBlanc said users not upgrading from a previous version of Windows and are building their own PC or installing Windows 8 in a virtual machine or a separate partition, will be able to purchase and install the Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro System Builder product. Pricing for this option was not disclosed."

I will be getting my Win8 upgrade through a TechNet subscription. I have always been able to legally acquire a free version of Microsoft's OSes and use those licences. The only exception (when I paid my own money) was when I purchased Vista Ultimate...and we all know how that turned out  :puke:

I'm sticking with 7 x64.  I stuck with XP through the vista s**tstorm and I don't plan on making my PC a giant smartphone with 8's metro interface.

Turns out they're letting you upgrade to pro. Though this being an upgrade and with the ability to download and burn your own .iso, what if you need to do a fresh reinstall? Is just labeled "upgrade" yet is the full product? So many questions, much like when I walked out of the theater after watching Prometheus!

I find the Windows 8 Metro interface to be very clumsy and useless, I have a netbook and I don't see any real reason to own a tablet.

There are some pretty awesome upgrades under the hood that I would really enjoy.  Off the top of my head, I don't remember a time where a newer OS can run on older hardware than the previous OS and yet support the latest and greatest technologies.  And yet, as you say, they "ruined" it with the metro interface.  I don't doubt I I'll be able to get used to it, but playing with it on my laptop, i found metro to be ho hum.  I hate that you can't run multiple metro apps simultaneously and viewable at the same time (you are limited to at most, 1 full metro app with a mini-version of a second metro app relegated to 1/3 of the screen on the left or right).  The idea of multi-tasking within the metro UI has gone from assuming you can do tons of things at once, limited only by the hardware, to only being able to do one, maybe two things at once.  I don't see this as a step forward on something as powerful as a Core i7 and multiple monitors.

Taking a step back and instead of using Metro apps as the be all, end all, The metro screen can simply become a launcher where you go to launch seldom used apps, similar to the existing Start Menu.  All other common apps can be stickied to the task bar or desktop.  That hasn't gone away.  So with the $40 price, this is how I see myself using Win8 and giving it a good chance to see if I can get used to it.

The proof will be, after using Win8 for several months full time, if going back to Win7, I find that I wish I was back on Win8.  Time will only tell.

The ONLY way I will be upgrading is if M$ gives the end user the option of replacing the Metro UI with the classic start menu we all know and (mostly) love.  Hell, even the server iterations of windows 8 doesn't have a start menu.  I don't understand how that can be productive at all for IT pros.
