from what the fatwallet thread said, it's a legit upgrade iso, so yeah, you need windows 7. But that's no different than the $40 upgrade deal, this is just cheaper.

Does anyone know of a site with a good features breakdown on the various versions of 8? Also, do you know if there is a conversion mapping this time around (i.e you need Windows 7 version X to upgrade Windows 8 version x)

I just purchased this over the weekend. I have not installed it yet but you can download the ISO and burn it for use on a different machine. It does allow for a full install, it just asks for your windows 7 key.
