Title: Building a new uber rig.
Post by: zx2slow on August 29, 2007, 08:05:38 PM
I will be getting some equipment from newegg on Tuesday, i should have it by the end of the week so I can put it together over the weekend:

Intel q6600
8GB DDR2 800 G.Skill (2 4GB kits, so 4 2GB sticks total with 5-5-5-5 timings)
Asus Striker Extreme MoBo

I havent really decided on a video card yet, I think ill stick with my 7600GT's until the 89xx cards come out.  I really dont want to blow a ton of cash on some videocards when in a few weeks they will drop in price.  I figure I will load up on DDR2 while it is cheap, and I do like the VM's so I will be using it.

It will also be watercooled and overclocked to h*** like all my other rigs.

$1050 for the above gear + misc stuff

It should run around $1600 with video card.

So you're sticking with the same case, hard drives, sound, etc. I take it?

The case is getting more modified, the hard drives will stay for the time being.  I use onboard sound, I think the striker has the onboard audugy.

How do you get windows to recognize more than 3GBs of memory?

And wtf do you do that uses 8 gigs anyway?  Sounds like a waste of money to me.

I believe he runs XP x64 edition, so the 4GB limit of 32-bit processing doesn't exist, nor does the software limit of 3GB for 32-bit XP.

From his OP, he says "and I do like the cock so I will be using it." Wait a minute, scratch that. He said he likes VM's, my mistake.

:blue: Why is everybody always picking on me, you miss one big lan and you become the forum whipping boy?   I can't wait for tib to OC another video card so I am left alone.

Anyhoo, yeah I run XP x64.  I use VM ware a lot, Solaris and Ubuntu VM's for work.  I'm going to wait until the core2 octo's and nForce 700 series and 8900 series are out in november.  I dont want to spend a pile of cash and find I am at a dead end when it comes time to upgrade.  I am putting together a phase change unit for this rig right now, a giant DF compressor and I will have to get it regassed.  There are no off the shelf units (Vapochill, Mach) that can handle the heat load from an overclocked quad core, so I have to build my own.

Nah, I like my 7800GS just the way it is. Wish they made a aftermarket cooler for it though.

That is how it always starts.  You get a new cooler then you sit and think "How much more can I get out of it now??"  Then it blows up.

ROFL....I blew my 6800 that way (god rest its soul). Anyways, 8GB is a waste though....Why so much memory??? (only thing I can think of is hard core Adobe Premier video editing) I also saw from Tom's that they had there Q6600 up to the 3.6 range pretty easily with voltages only hitting 1.525 (still safe for daily running). SO should be interesting where you get with phase change (you'll prob hit wall before topping out)

Hold on there, I am an AMD fanboy too.

Clock for clock the core2 eats anything AMD has alive.  AMD's silicon tops out at 3.6GHz (Their new 'Black' edition AM2 may hit 3.8), I could get 4GHz out of a $290 quad core2.

I love AMD, but my money goes to proformance.  I am waiting for K10 and nForce7 before I make the plunge.

The Phenom x2, x4 will hopefully allow me to be an AMD fanboy again, if it doesn't
then i just, i just don't know  :frown:
suicide? :bigcry:

 :elaugh:
but seriously i plan on Building a new rig in april, hopefully the G92 will be out and stable, along with the x4 and above, i'll probably pick up some kind of phenom x4 unless, intel kills AMD again by then.

maybe cause no-one is concerned about saving  a few bucks if it means sacrificing performance!!!!!  Those AMD procs are too little too late. Just busting ur balls sparticusx

Thats why I had to choose for my E4400 over a AMD 5600+ (115 bucks total to buy it). I love amd don't get me wrong but they're just getting crushed right now on the market. My E4400 goes 3.4 no problem and anytime you match an AMD and a Core 2 clock to clock, Intel owns it. Heck the 6000+ have issues in some applications keeping up with the E6600's and if you throw a 2.93 in there...Its almost matching with the 6400+. Interesting to see though what AMD pulls out, but I'm sorta doubting its gonna matter. They're screwing them selfs right now on the market. Intel is going to have quad cores out a good 3-4 months it seems before AMD can do anything. And even when they do start releasing quad phenon, they're going to limit it's released. Supposably only releasing up to 2.0ghz by the end of the year. Just seem like they're screwing everything up in marketing and paying heavily for it. I'm just not sure how they're going to be able to climb back on top
