See, Shoctor and I know how to use a freakin' desk!
QFT
And yes, I would have even more on the desk if I used a trackball... hmm....
And yeah, that's why we need LAN parties... It's when I clean the desk!
-
Haha same.
-
I get annoyed with anything in the way of moving my mouse lol
-
Excuse me while I whip this out. All my pics suck as I only have a camera phone. I really want to see what Czar has going on because he said he is putting some work into his /b/attlestation.
My fapping /b/attlestation room:
Close up of my rigs guts, I keep the side cover off:
Over in the corner I have my network rack, its a SKB portable quarter rack, I have a dual socket Xeon machine with 4GB of RAM and Intel GB NICs rocking pfsense (Is there really any other way to perform network magic lol) and some GB Netgear switches, the main one is fully managed, I have fibre trunks connecting them. I only have 6 NICs across all my PC's so its a tad on the overkill side.
And in the other corner I have a file server project I have been ignoring:
And I gotta watercool everything:

I probably would to. Trackball FTW, biotches!

You know it. Got my aloe vera, benadryl itch-stopping gel, purell, pimple cream, and herbal vapo rub (my personal favorite).

Tibs must have some really freaky stuff sitting on his desk if he wont take a pic.

well.... LET'S SEE YOUR /B/ATTLESTATION

He has to put the children in the basement again.
-
Finally got around to doing mine. Damn 3rd shift leaves me with precious little time to do anything I want. Now that the weekend's here, I don't feel to be in any rush at all.
My place is a 1-room w/kitchen and bathroom, so you'll understand why everything is grouped together. It works out though, as it is a wall of entertainment!
-
nic setup. vacuum cleaner for those lonely nights.
-
holy Crap man... got screens?
-
Ha ha, yeah... the g/f has 2 kids and her work schedule conflicts with mine a bit, so... you know. Gotta make do!
And yes, yes I do. Actually, I need to replace the left and right lcd on the desktop with the same one in the middle and get one of those nifty triple lcd stands. The one on the farrrrr left is technically my secondary monitor, as the main three are hooked to my matrox triplehead2go. Although, if I could (and I'm certainly insane enough to do it), I'd get 2 more 40" like the one I have and hook those to the T2G. I'm just not sure the resulting electric bill is something I'd want to deal with.

My setup and server area...

thats a pretty amazing setup there.
-
Pic is a few months old but...
Do you like to have a full monitor dedicated to each application you're running? =D
-
I think that's two systems? 3 lcd's for each system?
There was a recent review of a 5 lcd setup on widescreengamingforums.com in a eyefinity setup and it had all 5 screens turned in portrait mode and..... it was beautiful. I shed a tear.
-
I think the crazy multi-mon setups are cool... but I always end up asking myself whyyyyyyy for home use.
At work I have 3 different systems, on 3 different networks, spanned across 4 monitors. I have tons of Crap I need to monitor on a daily basis, so I can see having the setup that we do. Now for home use, I cant justify anymore than 2... Crap right now I cant even justify 2 (matching monitor to mine is still in the high $300s), but that's just me. So I have to ask the guys rockin more than two monitors; Is it really worth the extra money for the screen real estate?
-
I have two 28" LCD's Pleanty of room for work and play at the same time, I have been thinking about a third for NV surround but 6 seems crazy. What do you do with all of them?
-
I NEED two... I often need two things full screen... Else I can't finish the job.
-
I think that's two systems? 3 lcd's for each system?
Nope, dual 5970s.
The screen bezels are the worst part. It isnt bad in landscape, but in portrait its much more annoying.
Do you like to have a full monitor dedicated to each application you're running? =D
Pretty much, lol.
-
It's worth it when you game, but that's just me. The massive landscape is completely worth it. I don't do it all the time and not all games support it, but games that do are that much more beautiful. Or scary. Dead Space.
-
@Petch
It takes a while to get used to but I love my triple monitor setup. Playing BC2 in 5760x1080 is a pretty awesome experience. It really takes full advantage in racing games like Dirt or Need For Speed. I find myself using all 3 screens a lot. Minecraft on 1, iTunes and Teamspeak on another with a websiite open on the 3rd. I did a lot of research before I took the dive into Eyefinity. No real regrets on the decision. Just wished it had more support with the FoV issues older games have
-
I would think there'd be FoV hacks/fixes for it like people made up for games when the Triplehead2Go was at it's prime. Did you take a gander at widescreengamingforums.com to see if the stuff people made worked with the eyefinity setup?
I'm thinking that once a solution is applied to a game, it should be uniform across ultra-widescreen standards as you're just trying to play nice with a resolution change.
-
Screen bezels, lcd screen brightness/color varience, and cards not coming with 32gb framebuffers = no thanks to multimonitor gaming.
-
You'd be surprised at how quickly you get used to not "seeing" the bezels. For all the action that's always focused on the center monitor, you start to view them like the frame of a car when you turn your head to look out the side windows. You just stop seeing them altogether.
-
But can you play WoW in 3 screen?
-
How many seats would I need to buy if I brought my beastly screen setup to the LAN?
lol
-
But can you play WoW in 3 screen?
Yes! but its crazy tough to keep track of my add ons and deeps meters, omen etc etc with it so I just run it in window mode

Depending on width at least 3.

No No, the real question is..... Will it blend?

BATTELSTAYSHUNS NAO!
-
Depending on width at least 3.
Takes up most of the 6ft desk it's on.
With very little modification I could put the base on the floor, swing the other arm around and have a dual user workstation.

Yea, if you want to bring that rig along it would be 3 seats to cover the space and power requirements. Also, keep in mind that you'll need to create 3 intranet accounts (intranet.fites.net) and sit each of the accounts down next to each other to reserve your seats.
How do you weigh the rig down? Is it attached to the table?
-

lol
When i brought my full rig up I bought 3 seats to cover space and power considerations.

That's the one I checked. The GPS info isn't there, but the Subject location is, but that's what it's auto focusing on.

I picked it out before the exif. LOL Just look at my pics. Same phone, same OS.
EDIT: And I left my GPS data in... It's close, but not quite exact.

pfsense 2.0 RC3
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13ghz
4GB RAM
120GB Hard Drive.
State Table set to 2500000 (yes thats million)
Installed Packages:
HAVP Antivirus
Snort 2.0,
Country Block (helps alot with spam)
Squid
BandwidthD
OpenVPN
Anyterm
Widescreen Dashboard (A MUST)
Runs full QoS for all game servers.
Server (term used loosely)
Runs a server OS but not exactly server hardware
Core i7 930 2.8Ghz
24GB DDR3
Hardware Raid
3 x 2TB Hard Drives RAID5
1 x 1TB Hard Drive for internal backups (important stuff eventually sent off site)
This is my baby <3 Runs 15VMs in HyperV. Each of our game servers (CSS, CSS:GG, TF2, L4D2, Brink, Crysis Wars, UT3, MW1 Vanilla, GG, Pro Mod) in their own limited resource VM.
Runs the domain controller, Web Server, MSSQL/MYSQL Database server, and soon an Exchange server (waiting on the static IP) also in their own individual VM's.
Will soon be running RemoteFX as soon as I figure out licensing and get a bigger psu.
I usually let it run any other goofy projects and research I might be doing at the time like GNS3 for my CCNA study, fraps encoding etc...
She certainly needs a new case. :(
------------
My actual workstation is nothing special. Typical i7 920, 6GB ram, 1TB Hard Drive, GTX570 all air cooled. Dual 23" Monitors.
-
You need to get that server the case that it deserves my friend. Very nice
-
Oh forgot to add it will be running RemoteFX soon too. Throwing in my old 8800GTS's.
Soon as I take a crash course in MS Licensing, and get a bigger PSU to handle the cards.
Hopefully this should allow me to game from anywhere when i travel. A must for when BF3 comes out because I'll be away all that week :(
Has fites ever thought about RemoteFX for our friends who might want to come to the LAN but dont have the pc capable?
-
The case from the Fites250 LAN back in February.

Hot!!

I am confused... I thought this thread was about the place you put your ass not your rigs. :elaugh:
Also a state table that large... I guess if you got the RAM it doesn't matter, but I doubt you would ever be able to fill even half of it. And I have my own personal feelings about Hyper-V. If the domain controller on the same box and I very much hope that is the base OS doing it and not in a VM...
And just some quick notes.
Installed Packages:
HAVP Antivirus -- Last I saw can't do scanning of SSL connections. (Makes sense.)
Snort 2.0, -- Good, the rules for my office are strict and set to block offenders indefinitely.
Country Block (helps alot with spam) -- Found this to be a poorly implemented hack last time I checked it out.
Squid -- I guess if you are sharing that connection with a bunch of people and want to do some content filtering.
BandwidthD -- Hit or miss, but if it does work has some decent info.
OpenVPN -- Part of the base install
Anyterm -- Cool concept, but I am never without a SSH client.
Widescreen Dashboard (A MUST) - Meh, I don't spend much time there.
Also the QoS is great when you know what your connection will be, but it seems in this day of Comcast speed boost, and the like, it seems this comes out to a bit of a wash. But if you have a guaranteed speed leased line it makes this more valuable.
Has fites ever thought about RemoteFX for our friends who might want to come to the LAN but dont have the pc capable?
As a group. No. We already have plenty of stuff to manage. ;)
-
BUT PFSENSE IS MAJIKS! LIKE FudgeING MAGNETS!

Holy critique. I guess i misinterpreted the point of this thread. Is there a rig thread? I'll move the post :)
I agree with the state table, but after I saw how much ram the system used after it was up and running it doesnt hurt. Its like... why not? Its ram just sitting there. We've gotten it up to a million before. but it took 12 of us all running serveral torrentz with 10's of thousands of seeds. She didnt even hiccup. In comparison we managed to crash the very first pfsense I ran with a 500mhz P2 and 512MB of ram. That only took four of us haha.
https virus scanning would require a device that scans at Layer 7. Something like Untangle, I believe does it. But that things a a Ford Fiesta comapred to the rocket ship that pfsense is. Its state table is hard coded @ 10k. Know what happens if even one person opens up the steam server browser while behind an Untangle box? Your internet goes to Crap. chr0n0splooge runs it at his house. Not thanks. HAVP does return more false positives. But then again pfsense wsant meant as a UTM.
Country block works well. On default it cut down on spam 90%. I have found that the default lists are sometimes out of date. I had the idea of downloading the list, extracting them to pfsense. If i was a little more fluent with *nix/bsd id setup a cron job to do it every so often, but i didnt think it was worth the effort. I've since lost the address to the site that provides these. Same for squid whos lists can be out dated.
Yes I'm using squid for filtering content. Its really just there to "have". It also acts as a webcache (hence the 120GB HD) which I guess helps out a little on Tuesdays with all the VM's and actual physical machines I have here pulling updates.
BandwidthD and Dartstat (i switch between the two) give great information. The g/f's pc is always in the lead. She streams Netflix nonstop.
I use anyterm because I'd rather not open a direct SSH port over the internet. I hardly ever use it anyway
Whether you spend alot of time in the dashboard or not the widescreen package is a MUST. It allows you to display alot more information. Theres really no reason to NOT have it if you use widescreen monitors.
I dont have Comcast speed boost. I have FiOS. Theres no throttling or some gimmicky speed increase. I have the 15/5 plan and CONSISTENTLY get 20/10. The g/f can stream netflix, the VM server can download torrents, and I can play BC2 no lag at all.
HyperV I have my gripes with. In reality I'd like to use ESXi but at the time of setting all this up initially I had no exposure to it. Its done everything I ever needed it to do. I use ESXi at work and I like it better, but at this point it woudl take entirely too much effort and time to convert everything. It works the way it is and honestly wouldnt really work any better with ESXi. Besides the host server also doubles as a NAS and I refuse to virtualize a NAS.
Not sure what your gripe is about a virtualized domain controller. I dont have the infrastructure or care to have the electic bill associated with all the things that I know I should be doing. This recreational home stuff, although I try to keep as many enterprise standards as possible assuming they dont interfere with anything around the house. I save that stuff for the servers and network I manage at the job. I do this all day. I try to keep it close, but really let alot of things slide here at home.
Regardless I have a disaster recovery plan in the event anything happens. In all honesty I wouldnt even implement it. Its not worth the trouble. Nothing I do here is THAT important. But it does exist and would work if i decided to go down that path. Nothing here is that mission critical. You can rest assure my DR plan was out and ready for work this past weekend, in case a tree fell on the office and rain got it or something and burned the place down who knows.
but ty so much for the critique, i like to stay on top of things. any other questions?
-
I figure nothing is mission critical with a home setup. I am a fan of the vsphere hypervisor in all it's forms especially ESXi. Hyper-V does have it's benefits in an all MS environment but back when I had the option of ESXi vs Hyper-V I went ESXi because at the time and I am not sure if it's still true, but Linux Guests weren't the friendliest. (And that's where I spend most of my time.) But on to the domain controller in a VM. I am just saying IF this was a mission critical piece I would hope that you have more than one. From my last interaction with Hyper-V live move was a no no. Maybe I should update what I know about hyper-v. I have heard good things about the newer versions. I agree that virtualizing a NAS is really silly.
But you have to remember you aren't the only one that has a job where they "do this all day."
As for your gripe with Untangle. Yeah, it's a crappy router, but it does a good job with email and content filtering. That's why BOTH live on my office network. Though with Exchange 2010's Anti-Spam I might phase it out.
but ty so much for the critique, i like to stay on top of things. any other questions?
I never posed any questions. ;)

I've heard things about *nix environments with HyperV and I'm not sure as well. I'm not a nix fan. I've tried installing them in HyperV and you must use the Legacy adapters for your virtual NIC's. But since my "server" is headless and I only access it via remote desktop after I install a nix OS I cant do anything. Wish I was fluent enough to get remote access going, but i suck. One day I may load it up with VM Workstation, get VNC installed, convert the VHD and presto!
When I said I do this all day at work I wasnt implying I didnt think anyone else did. Just that I dont really feel like doing it when I come home. Makes you wonder how a male OBGYN feels huh?
and ha you may not have asked any questions, but they certainly warranted answers :)

Hopefully only with his hands. ;) Sorry I couldn't help myself. And I am right there in that "I don't really feel like doing it when I come home." camp as well.
