Yes it's true. Really hoping that this is just part of beta and not release. Also, if you get killed while adjusting options (like keybinds), the game will close you out of the options screen. STUPID considering that you can only change options while playing. /facepalm

So after playing for a few hours last night, I must say I am impressed.  On my aging q6600 @ 2.85ghz, 4gb of ram and a GTX460SC, it ran very smoothly on all medium settings....and still looked damn good doing it.  Now I am running at 1650x1080 only because that is my monitors native res.  But I didn't drop below 30fps due to graphics...only net lag at times.

The sound is AWESOME!  Firing your weapon in a long tunnel produces some nice acoustics.  But then transitioning to an enclosed space really changes the way your gun sounds.  Listening to gunfire coming from an adjacent hallway or room has a very nice effect as well.  Unfortunately, there are no vehics in the beta I think...or at least I haven't been on a server where there were vehics.

There are bugs...lots of them.  Random flashing when turning fast (I think it has to do with motion blur) but it only happens in certain situations...like hiding in bushes or going prone on rocks where you may clip the level or something.  Other bugs include random animation glitches.  People moving at run speed while looking like they are crouching.  Net lag has a bad effect on hit boxes.  I unloaded a clip into someone right in front of me but none of the hits registered.

Now for the part I really do not like: the interface.  Options can ONLY be changed in game.  Not waiting to spawn, not in the round setup,  IN GAME.  Meaning you have to spawn and sit there while configuring your Crap.  This may be a MP thing only since SP is not available at the time.  I would think you can set your stuff up in SP and it carries over into MP.

The Origin interface BLOWS!  I do not like nor want this interface.  THe server browser is far from adequate in my opinion.  When you search for a server you can either browse or quick join.  Honestly it is faster to quick join but you have no control over which server you join.  When you are abale to join, for some reason it loads BF3 ibehind the browser and not in full screen.  That is really annoying as it tells you that (obviously) alt+enter will make it full screen....but it doesn't.  You have to spawn, go into your options and select full screen from there.

I am sure (read hoping) EA will fix some of these issues.  But all in all I am impressed with this game.  Feels like a very good mix of BF2 and BC2 but with nicer graphics and sound.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

Did any of you guys try the caspian map yet?  I heard they opened those up for people in the beta and I've seen a few vids floating around youtube.  looks like they have the jets unlocked in the vids i saw.  It looked really awesome but there were bugs.   It actually says something if Sean is impressed with this game so I know i will like it.   To quote Czar " I hope to frag ya soon"!!!!

I have only managed to get into that rush map in metro hell...

I love the sound.
Graphics are a big step forward and I cant wait for the full game.
Medic MG's are stupidly OP.
Shotguns are under powered
Grenades are either buggy as hell or very underpowered.
The entire interface for spawning and kit management needs serious work. It feels too light, with too little information provided and too little control over re-entry into the game... I am hoping this is just due to it being a beta and not what they plan on going live with.

Do you mean the shotguns are underpowered compared to BC2, or that they are underpowered overall. Because the BC2 shotguns are extremely OP. You should never be able to snipe with a shotgun from the other side of a map.

As for the interface, I agree wholeheartedly. Also, the squad interface (or lack thereof) is confusing as hell. Apparently you can only leave a squad and join one. But you can't specify WHICH squad. It sort of just puts you into a random squad. That better be a beta only thing.

And Battle Log is definitely horrific, as suspected. Not better.

Again, aside from these shortcomings and the frequent system crashes I'm getting, it's still very cool.

I am talking about blasting some one point blank and it taking 2+ rounds to kill them unless you luck out with a head shot or they were already wounded.

I noticed that with every gun I used, though :P

Also, when you mean medic MG, do you mean Support? The only gun I got as a medic (Assault class) was the M16A4 and shotgun so far. Wasn't sure if the assault class got MG's or not.

After playing for a few hours theres quite a few things I like and HATE.

First off the notion that this is a BETA is complete and utter BS.  Theres no way they are going to let this go on for 10 days and think they have any shot at changing code before the 25th.  This BETA is for the release day patch.  As others have said it is buggy.  Way too buggy for a game at this point in its development if you ask me.

Flashes are annoying when moving fast.  They are usually white.  But if you're standing near fire the flashes are orange.  It has serious clipping issues and it looks like you fall straight through the ground.  I for one STILL cannot get the game to go full screen.  I have the option checked in the settings.  ALT+ENTER does not work. I can maximize this windows but I still get the title bar at the top and my task bar at the bottom.

I really hope that just like the game this is a testing period for battlellog (the game's social and server browser).  Theres no waiting in queue for a server.  You get the message its full and you just have to keep clicking it.  If your friend is in a server theres no joining it to wait in queue while you make yourself a drink.  After I stopped playing I believe chr0n0phage said they implemented a server filter.  I was bitching all day that I couldnt filter out the full servers.  Though it didnt really matter because when I sorted by server population it would still tell me a server that displays as 24/32 is full.  They probably implemented the filter at the same time they unlocked caspian border.

You can start "parties"  where you and your friends get a in a group.  You can then join a game together.  Half the time it didnt work.  At this point trying to find a server with multiple open slots is next to impossible.  This would seem like a good idea when the game comes out and there are 1000's of server to choose from.  Did they not do a simple  equation like....  totalbetatesters/32 = the number rush servers we should have?   We were only able to do this once, but after we launched a party game we got onto the same team.  I dont know if it does that automatically or not.  However there is NO squad management.  You are put in a squad and thats your squad.  You can choose to leave the squad and then join another squad, but you dont get to choose which squad to join. It just puts you in one.  We were never able to play on the same squad.  Pretty stupid for a game that is so team oriented.

I was absolutely useless to my team until I finally got 10 kills with the M16 which unlocks the 4x scope.  Theres alot of pixel hunting and the iron sights I thought were useless.  Chr0n0phage said he was doing ok with the iron sights.  And jerkoff Lilb always does good.  Maybe I just suck.  but after I unlocked the 4x my kd/r stayed above 2.0-4.0

I am absolutely thrilled that snipers are going to be useless.  I hope they dont patch this out.  Just a personal preference of mine.  You will know the exact instant you encounter a sniper.  Their "lens flare" is more like a spot light.  You wont be able to hide as a sniper with what looks like some big ass light sitting on top of your rifle.  I hate snipers anyway ;)   Snipers get the knife treatment.  Soon as I can get into the habit of pressing F for knife I'll be sneaking around shanking those jerkoffs every chance I get.

I really dislike the metro map.  I cant wait to try caspian border.  I doubt I'll ever play metro when the game comes out.  Maybe it will grow on me.  I cant even put my finger on what I dont like at this point.

What do I like?  The obvious stuff!

The graphics are great.  I can play on ultra with my GTX570 and it stays around 50fps. This is definitely NOT a console port.  They were true to their word that this was being developed for PC's first and foremost.  I thought BC2 had amazing graphics and detail but this blows it away.  Something interesting to note is that the download was only 3.5GB.  Something tells me we may be getting some higher res textures when the game releases.  Maybe we wont see this type of performance.

The sound as someone touched on before is just as top notch.  At first I thought they re-used some of the sound from BC2.  But there are tons added.  The effects are very good.  At first I was overwhelmed.  It sounded like there was just too much going on.  There was never a quiet moment.  I got used to it.   I'm not sure if it was my setup but I couldnt tell if iI was getting directional sound.  I heard all kinds of junk but I couldnt get any indication of where any of it was coming from.  Maybe its in the options.  Something to look into.

The game play is just as fun.  It's slower and more tactical but its not boring.  Always action.  As I said before I felt useless until I unlocked the 4X for my M16.  I'm still a little undecided about prone.  I do think its needed but it certainly promotes camping like a mofo.  Thats a problem until you start to learn the map.  I cant tell you how many times i ran past a camper and died only to run past the same spot again because I didnt exactly know where I was when I died.  After a few rounds that got better.

In closing this game is everything you expected from DICE.  Its amazing.  But sadly they have a metric crap ton of junk to fix by the 25h.  Heres to hoping for a smooth launch!

Support.

When you send a round of 3 1/2" high brass magnum 00 buck into some one point blank at 1450 fps it will take limbs off or open up a cavity in their body big enough to Crap in. It should not take 2, 3, or 4 shots to kill some one. If you hit some one with a puss puss 9mm round it should take many more hits to kill some one. Of course we are talking about a game where some one can survive a mid mass .50 round out of a BMG so why not... Fudge you EA.

Do you guys remember the BC2 "beta"? I remember thinking there's no way they could fix the bugs before release. (and in reality, they don't. games generally go gold a month before release). And yet the release build has many things fixed. The way they explained this was that the "beta" that went out was on a much older build than what their current stable build was at.

My only guess as to why they did this was to provide one of their buggier builds just to confirm that the bugs persisted with a wider audience. That or they wanted to give people the short end of the stick so they'd be wow'ed when launch runs better :P

hehe,  the later is prolly true Agent.  they prolly know there are a few bugs left and can't fix them in time so they'll release a build thats really really buggy so when the final is released with a few bugs people will be happy that it's mostly fixed!

I would of loved to see a conquest map in the beta. Anyone want to make a Platoon?

The BF3 beta is working ok with the latest nForce drivers.  It feels like a console port, more to the point there are no custom key mappings (I support WASD's genocide fyi).

It looks decent, but the metro map was chosen to woo the COD bro's rather than for the battlefield players
