Title: ATM Reboot
Post by: sully! on June 17, 2006, 09:30:14 PM
Has anyone ever seen an ATM reboot? I just did tonight. I swiped the card, entered the pin, said how much I wanted, and then it just sat there telling me to wait while my order was processed.

And it sat there.....and sat there....for about 2-3 minutes. I didn't want to walk away because who knows if it would suddenly start spitting out money (I wish ;)

It then rebooted and I got a pretty neat insight on what we take for granted most times. The PC that was running this particular ATM (a PNC Bank ATM, made by NCR) booted up, showing me that the BIOS is dated August 26, 1997, and is using an NCR extended ROM (version 1.0.17 I think). It has 16MB of RAM and runs OS/2 Warp (CPU info not displayed). The boot process took approximately 5-7 minutes and when it completed, it gave me a nice "Temporarily out of Service" message.

So all that and I didn't even get the cash. Luckily it was the kind you swipe, not the the kind that sucks in the card, or that would probably be lost too.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Anyone else ever experience this or something like it?

P.S. To any DMCA lawyers out there, I did not hack into this ATM, nor did I reverse engineer it in anyway. This information was all freely visible to me as I stood there watching it reboot. And if you are a DMCA lawyer, go to hell and die! You disgust me!    :angryfire:    :badboy:

Yes, most of the ATM's run OS/2. When setting them up there are usually THREE techs there all from different companies. Reason for this is security. The main tech sets the box up. The other two are there to double check and each enters HALF... Yes HALF of the encrytption key with out the other techs seeing it then it must be burned on the spot. :) Only reason I know this is cause I was the number 2 tech on 50 of them. :)

BIOS from 1997? 16MBs of RAM? So where are all these fees going that are charged for their "maintenance"?

I've been going to the same bank for 6 years, I have seen the ATM at the bank work for one person EVER... always "out of order" and this was at the bank center, not a stand alone somewhere....

These are the people we trust with our money ?

I have never seen that happen.  But there was this place I used to go that had a Mortal Kombat 2 arcade machine, and if you unplugged it and then plugged it back in it would let you play for free.  I always thought that was really cool...
