Arcitic Cooling
« on: July 12, 2008, 06:56:05 AM »
I know some of you recently bought the ATI 4 series video cards. And are experiencing some heat issues. Well not really issues but it does run a bit warm. Probably to warm for your liking; so I mentioned the Arctic Cooling solution. And here it is; it is about $40 but it is well worth it. They did a test on a 9600GT, running at 79C. The cooler brought it down to 49C; and it already has the MX-2 thermal paste already applied.

No, I'm going to get rid of the rig before it does. I might just keep my 7800gs, the last of the mighty AGP series. Probably put it into a HTPC, if I can find a AGP board.

I got the asus 4850.  I'm just going to wait a little bit for any new bios revs or drivers to help things out before i get an aftermarket heatsink.  The asus came with a utility that allows you to tweak the fan speeds based on various temperatures.

Right now it's very quiet and idles around 59C.  I still need to do some more tweaking though.  While i'm playing cod4, the fan will speed up a little bit to compensate for the temperature.

That's not too bad, but every now and then, it will just go full speed and scare the Crap out of me.  So, i just gotta up the threshold for where the full speed kicks in.

Outside of this, AMD has already stated that this GPU is designed to operate at the hotter temperature.  My problem now is just to keep the fan from getting too loud.

Some people have mentioned that if they use this cooler. It will actually take up about 3 slots inside the case. It is actually 2 80mm fans on this heatsink. That scares me, because there is no way you can run a crossfire setup. Unless you get a extra long cable.
