I've been a huge anti-Sony guy ever since their "rootkit on audio CD" fiasco back in 2005. This is just another chapter in my Sony Hatred book.

Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

That's Mr. Deception to you.

Well, they officially put one foot over the line drawn in the sand. The other will be getting their way in the court stuff.

If you've gone to Geohotz's site at any point between January 2009 and now, Sony has been granted the right to acquire your IP addresses.

Quick copy/paste, the rest is at the website linked. "The approved subpoena requires the company to turn over "documents reproducing all server logs, IP address logs, account information, account access records and application or registration forms" tied to Hotz's hosting. The Bluehost subpoena also demands "any other identifying information corresponding to persons or computers who have accessed or downloaded files hosted using your service and associated" with the www.geohot.com website, including but not limited to the "geohot.com/jailbreak.zip file.""

So it all ended. They settled. EXCEPT that Geo is only banned from tinkering with any more $ony products and talking about how to tinker with said toys. $ony also isn't getting a dime from him and vise versa. If he does do anything, he can get fined two separate and outrageous amounts (I don't feel like looking it up, I'm lazy right now) depending on what action he takes.

HOWEVER, despite how childlike his actions and attitude about the whole court thing may have been, he does seem to mean well. Or at least, want to mean well.

"Hotz today posted a screengrab of a receipt showing a $10,000 payment to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Internet privacy and digital rights advocacy organization which also supported Hotz during his suit.

Hotz says the $10,000 represents "as promised, all left over legal defense money, plus a little to bump it to a nice number." Writes Hotz:

This money goes to the EFF in hopes that America can one day again be a shining example of freedom, free of the DMCA and ACTA, and that private interest will never trump the ideas laid out in the constitution of privacy, ownership, and free speech.""
