Nope....you can play it online.  There's really no protection on it.  At least in the vanilla (no expansions) version as I have never tested the expansions online.

I'd play again if my card could handle it. The Mad Moxxi DLC was pretty fun/tough when I tired to play it. Seems like it could really benefit with co-op.

The Knoxx DLC has some great farming opportunities as well as a uber tough boss (I can't beat it alone without hiding in a cheap place) whos loot is epic.

I am playing through again mostly because of boredom, its a fun game that would be great to play through online, too bad the online part was so bugged.

Yeah they fixed a lot of the online troubles since launch. It's pretty painless now.
