Title: Abandoned Places
Post by: krakah on June 04, 2012, 08:42:16 AM
Hey guys.  Been awhile since I poked around here. Been really busy with work and junk.  Played my first BF3 on Saturday for the first time in two weeks.  Was going through withdrawl!

Anyway.  As it turns out Chris and I have had this fascination with abandoned places for quite some time.  Chris went to Centralia last summer and actually said it was pretty lame. Seemed more like an attraction.  Lots of people around.

We decided we wanted to check out Pennhurst Asylum.  This may be a little too ambition of a project.  I'll skip this for now.

Yesterday we went out to Fricks Lock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fricks_Locks_Historic_District) and Linfield Industrial Park/Distillery (http://www.opacity.us/site29_linfield_industrial_park.htm).  It was pretty cool and a decent starter adventure

Some pics here (http://imgur.com/a/1lwRA#0), more eventually as we're developing the film.  YES a camera with film!

I dont make it home very often back to the Harrisburg Area, but  I wouldnt mind checking out  Williams Grove Amusement Park.

Williams Grove Amusement Park was the first amusement park I went to as a kid.  I remember that place vividly. Even looking at a Bing Birds Eye (http://binged.it/LZzOf1) I can spot where all the rides used to be.  The thing about the the overhead of that map is that its from 2010.  Has anyone drove by there recently and seen it?  I dont even see a fence around there anymore.  Any info?  A wiki article says the rides have been sold, but it looks as though most of the buildings still remain.  You can clearly see the roller coaster and the water slide.  The building where the "Himalaya" was is still there, as is the fun house, and the enclosure to the bumper cars.

This might be something I check out next year when I visit you guys for your LAN.  Anyone else have this same fascination I do?  Know of any other cool places to check out?

I will second that Centralia is pretty lame, but I did go to Concrete City (Concrete City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCHX1ol7rTg#ws)) in Nanticoke with some friends. Not much there to see really as it's just concrete buildings that are decrepit, falling to pieces, and covered in graffiti. Interesting bit of history, but nothing too impressive. A friend of mine said there are some near Mahonoy City that are pretty neat.

I read about concrete city too.  As you said it just sounded like big heaps of concrete.

Pennsylvania has alot of really weird abandoned places.  I was reading about this place in the norther part of the state where a cult leader took about 100 people out into the woods and was preparing for a nuclear holocaust.  Apparently the concrete bunkers are still there.  Weird.  We Pennsylvanians are wackos.

I did this kind of thing a bit as a teenager, but never made any special trips to do so. I would just explore the area around where I lived, going wherever I could ride my bike to. I lived in a very rural area and I'd find various trails through the woods that would lead to some old house, or chicken coops no longer in use.

This is the kind of thing I want to do with my son when he's older. I don't think he'd be too interested in it right now and definitely couldn't appreciate the history or the "horror movie" vibe your imagination can sometimes create when visiting places like this.

Its hard to find up to date info on these places.  That site is from 2007 I guess right before the rides were auctioned off.  It also says the owners live on site.  Who knows.  When we went to Fricks Lock yesterday we saw a newish looking fence blocking off half of the houses.  We read nothing about this.  I thought about climbing over it... but its one thing to ignore "no trespassing" signs,  its completely different to scale an 8ft fence.

Yes, the Williams Grove info is out-of-date at this point, but I really wanted to share that link because of the other places listed on the site: http://www.uer.ca/locations/newlist.asp?country=United%20States&province=Pennsylvania (http://www.uer.ca/locations/newlist.asp?country=United%20States&province=Pennsylvania) It's a good starting point to find new things to explore.

yes thanks for the link!  I hadnt come across this site yet, and I'll be combing through it the next few days.  Theres also a 20 mile stretch of the Turnpike that was abandoned, has 3 tunnels through the mountain.  Seems like a cool place to take a bike ride through. Half way between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

EDIT

May as well check out Jersey and Delaware.  Close enough to me currently.

When i was a kid there used to be an abandoned ophanage in these woods near my house and we would go there and film movies and stuff.  creepy for sure.  They tore it down eventually though.  Just go to downtown harrisburg, you'll find lots of "abandoned" places.  LOL
