6800GT or wait?
« on: September 16, 2005, 07:22:24 AM »
Current setup:
athlon XP @2400MHz
1GB RAM
360GB RAID 0 setup
ATI 9800PRO 128MB

the Video card is the only thing I have left to upgrade, should I just do it and get it over with?
I know that AGP is almost dead, I want to grab a hight end card before prices start going up.....

I plan on having this system for about another 1.5-2 years
any input?

I would prolly hit up a new CPU/Motherboard first. But thats just me, others may disagree, but I think that investing in AGP is not a great idea. It seems that everything is going PCI-x.

Agreed... no Mobo/CPU first... a kick ass video card is only as strong as the CPU doing the processing.

I run an Athlon 2400+ with 768mb DDR333 ram and a GeFX 5900XT, my comp provides rock solid performance in all the games that we play at fites, but don't think about sliding the graphics options up for the sake of framerate.  I'd also recommend a new chip and proc for the biggest performance boost on your current rig.

It sucks being on the baseline for acceptable performance...

I just put together a new system.
Asus A8n SLI Deluxe
2 Evga 6800 GTs in SLI
2 gigs of ram

I just picked up the second Pcix yesterday.  All I can say is wow.  9020 in 3dmart in the stock setup and 6000 set at 1280x1024, 4 x AA w/anistropic filtering on.

well, firts, it's not a 2400+, it running @ 2.4GHz clock speed.

I'll have to check the Prices, spending any money now is a bad Idea but you know how it is.
Anyone want to buy a 9800GT, AUSUS NF2 mobo, 1GB RAM, and AXP clocked @ 2.4Ghz?

and what the hell is a "9800GT" ... afaik, 9800 is a radeon line, and those don't use "GT, GTX" designators ... they're SE, plain, or Pro ...

Yeah

upgrade mobo/processor first. I'm having this same issue with my comp. I had a 6600 gt with my 3000+ amd 64, then the card died out. So I upgraded it to a 6800 and still got simular scores on the benchmarks. I ran 5300 stock running aquamark 3 with my 6600 gt, I got 5500 with the 6800 gt. Even though I had another 128mb of ram on the card and it clocked faster. Heck, when I OC'd the 6600, I got 5800, so you need good processing power to get good frames. How can you debate AGP or PCIx when you already have a mobo. The 6800 will run fine and pciX is pointless unless you're running sli or you want the 7800(PCIx 16x isn't even close to running that much bandwith...agp 8x is still not close enough to see a differance as it is) All comes down to your budget.
