Title: 150man
Post by: vincegun on May 28, 2008, 08:30:49 PM
Hiya, been a long time since I logged in here. I just have a quick question brought on by a friend's query into me joining him at the next Maryland Lan Gamers event.

Is there going to be another 150 man lan in the York area anytime soon? It's been almost a year, right? My trigger finger is itching again. My sister has just gotten a VERY capable Imac and would be willing to join in the festivities as well. (A girl? Over the age of 18? Playing video games? On a mac? )

Ha ha. Funny, guys.

But seriously, as much of a downer as it'll be once you see her and find out what and who she's affiliated with, she's taken. That wouldn't stop her from allowing you to shower her with so many tech gifts that only her big brother could use them, though. :-P

Her Imac is pretty beefy, actually. 24" widescreen at 1900x1200, Intel core2 duo at 2.8gig, 2gig ddr2-800 (upgradeable to 4gig), 320gig sata at 7200rpm, slot-loading 8x superdrive capable of writing dvd+-r DL at 4x and regular dvd at 8x, ati radeon HD 2600 pro with 256mb (optional geforce 8800gs at 512), mini-dvi output, built-in camera, 1 firewire 400 and 1 fw800, 3 usb2.0 ports on the back and 2 on the keyboard, wireless-N, bluetooth 2.1, onboard 10/100/1000, simple stereo onboard sound (gonna use some usb 5.1's so she can get some form of surround) The only downside of all this is that only the ram is easily upgradeable by any end-user. Now.... I'd personally LOVE to crack open the case and tinker with it, but I doubt I would live to see the next sunrise if I did that. Oh yeah, did I mention what this is all contained in? The 24" model is just the screen and it's casing. That's it. Height, 20.5 inches. Width, 22.4 inches, Depth, 8.1 inches. Weight, 25.4 pounds. The entire system is contained in the monitor housing. I mean, jesus.... it's slick, I have to admit. http://www.apple.com/imac/specs (http://www.apple.com/imac/specs)

So, she has plenty of gaming potential. What's that about Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and WoW? Nah, she's going to bootcamp right into xp and game with the rest of us :-D I'm personally going to train her in... *cough* explosive ordnance in CoD and BF. You THINK the pretty little girl with tattoo's and piercings and the hippie IMAC is going to be harmless, but then BAM! Grenade in the FACE!!!!

So ah.... after a round or two with the Imac, I got XP32 installed. Windows update went fine, the windows version of bootcamp installed and after I updated the video drivers, I installed Crysis to see what the machine could do.

1920x1200 at medium detail is what I ended up with that was actually playable.

This is on a Imac. Not too shabby, methinks.

It's been kinda hush-hush as to why it's not happening in the summer. Can anyone fill us in on the reasons? Mebbe in doing so, some of us could help donate time/money whatever to get it goin.

Post by: The Shoctor on June 01, 2008, 02:41:46 PM
Well, we haven't announced it yet, but we do have a large winter event coming. (Definite. Locked in place.) As for being hush-hush; I didn't know that we were. But MAYBE if you had about 12k or thought that people would pay $100+ a seat we could have had a summer event. With energy prices going up and summer being a time for weddings they are going to take events they can charge more for during that time frame. And I know we could have found a venue that would be cheaper, but there are things that we feel are necessary. Not just to make the LAN Party possible, but enjoyable for everyone. We have many people who travel a great distance and would like to have sleep and bathing facilities within walking distance. Also during the summer the venue has to take account for cooling the place. That take a ton of energy with all our little space heaters running. That is another thing we have to consider for every venue, POWER. Will they have enough or do we have to rent a large clean power generator. Most places are not suited for our power needs so we would have to rent a generator. The rental fee isn't too bad, but have you seen the price of diesel fuel? Almost $5 or more a gallon. And I think last LAN we had to fill it twice.
I know I have gone on for a long time, but I want you to understand where we are coming from. We aren't blowing you guys off. We wanted so so so badly to have a summer LAN, but also we wanted to have a nice venue were everyone can have a good time without it costing an arm and a leg. And for the facilities available that everyone has come to expect. We want everyone talking about how much of a great time they had, not how much it cost or how bad the venue was.

Bottom Line: We want to have a fun event that won't drain your bank account and make each one of our events even better than the last one!

No need to go off the deep end, I was trying to be constructive as last year this was a big event but there has been absolutely no mention of it this year.

And yes, I think there are a lot of people who would gladly pay $100+ to have the time we did last year.

No need to go off the deep end

I don't think that was too far off the deep end. He addressed the majority of the questions that might be brought up as to why the LAN is not this summer. It was in-depth, informative, and I believe it answered your question to its fullest. :)

As for people willing to pay $100 for entry, I seriously doubt that. Remember, that $100 is on top of gas, food/drink expenses as well as maybe room expenses for each individual person. All that money to dish out just for a 36-48 hour LAN? I dunno. I personally wouldn't. As much as I love FITES and am a dedicated member, emptying my wallet on something like that doesn't make the LAN an enjoyable experience.

As much as I absolutely love the 50 man lans let alone the 150 man lans, $100 is way out of my budget to attend such an event regardless of how much fun it would be.  Agent hit the nail on the head there.

Hey everyone...

We're sorry that we didn't notify everyone a little earlier about a Summer event.  We have been working on getting a summer event going and feasible for months.. unfortunately, it is just too difficult and too costly to provide summer events anymore.  Room Fees, on top of necessary power (generators) just drive up the per attendee cost too much.

So a few weeks ago, the team signed a contract for a winter event.  The cost is much lower and we were able to pick the date, as opposed to being at the hotel's mercy.

We apologize for the lack of info, its just that we didn't want to flood the forums with non-factual based information that may turn out to be a problem for someone scheduling time off.

We will do a better job in the future of letting you know what is going on with FITES and our events.

hmmmm....I remember a dual video card setup.  Will have to dig into the grey matter a little and think about this.  I did find this online:
"In its day, the 3 million triangles and 12mb Video Memory offered by the Voodoo 2 card was pretty phenomenal. Now, of course, it is extremely old-hat. However, there are 2 reasons why it is not completely obsolete – 1/ as mentioned, it is extremely cheap these days, and 2/ you can link two of them up to give you a 24mb 3D card, which for the money isn’t too bad."

Yes, but it wasn't SLI.
Title: Re: 150man
Post by: Petch on June 03, 2008, 10:37:41 AM
Technically it was still SLI....

I had the same setup with 2x Monster 2 Voodoo 2's... Ill find the pics.  It had an internal or external means of connecting or "combining" the two cards.

I found SLI defined as:

"SLI: Scalable Link Interface. This is a technology from Nvidia that allows 2 PCIE graphics cards in the same computer system to be linked, thus sharing the load of the image being created. Cards in SLI are linked via a small hardware bridge. This makes for some hugley powerful gaming systems."

I'll give you the fact that it mentions 2 PCIE graphics cards, but if you look at the rest of the definition the setup falls right into place with being a prehistoric SLI.

I'll add pics in a few mins.

The Voodoo2 introduced Scan-Line Interleave (SLI) to the gaming market. In SLI mode, two Voodoo2 boards were connected together, each drawing half the scan lines of the screen. For the price of a second Voodoo2 board, users could essentially double their 3D throughput. A welcome result of SLI mode was an increase in the maximum resolution supported, now up to 1024×768. Despite the high cost and inconvenience of using three separate graphics cards (two Voodoo 2 SLI plus the general purpose 2D graphics adapter), the Voodoo2 SLI scheme was clearly the pinnacle of gaming performance at the time.
SLI capability was not offered in subsequent 3dfx board designs, although the technology would be later used to link the VSA-100 chips on the Voodoo 5.
Having since acquired 3dfx, Nvidia in 2004 reintroduced the SLI brand (now for Scalable Link Interface) in their GeForce 6 Series. ATI Technologies has also since introduced its own multi-chip implementation, dubbed "CrossFire". Although Scalable Link Interface and Crossfire operate on the original SLI principle, the algorithms used are now totally different.

HAHHAH, back in the day, I use to run 2x Voodoo2 Monster's.  They were pimp status.

Pic of the card:

And how you used 2 of them (similar to ATI's CrossFire crap):

Or you could hook them up internally:

ATI CrossFire:

Thank you Cuzz for setting all these n00bs straight...Jeez.

3DFX was the first to introduce a SLI setup with the Voodoo 2 cards. It was basically connected with a ribbon cable similar to that of a 40 pin floppy cable. The Voodoo cards however were very short lived as they couldnt compete to the Nvidia TNT and or ATI Rage cards. Mainly due to the difference in memory interface and memory (8MB and 12MB versions for the Voodoo 2 vs the 16MB and 32MB TNT2 Cards)

It was top of the line at the time and could still render Q3 above 60 maxed.
