Title: Vista successor, Windows 7 to be released next year?
Post by: kona on January 24, 2008, 10:30:04 AM
"A recently-release roadmap for the next major Window release – Windows 7 – indicates that Microsoft is planning to release the new operating system in the second half of 2009, rather than the anticipated release date of some time in 2010."

It's not a beta...it's a pre-alpha essentially, and unless you know someone within the Windows division at Microsoft, you're probably not getting it.

Well since we are on the discussion of new Windows OS. Anyone try the new Windows Home Server 08? I acquired a copy of it and I read articles on wikipedia. You only need a processor, ram, and harddrive. Nothing else, and the whole OS you can operate remotely. The server doesn't even need a monitor, keyboard or mouse.

It can also support 10 computers, and they are going to add support for x64 hardware and even Mac Timemachine. It came out back in July of 07, I guess it never took off that well.

I was in the beta program for Windows Home Server (the original release). I have to say it is fantastic. It lets me do a lot of the things I've wanted to do and have setup for my home and makes it very simple. I am especially fond of the concept of drive pooling and automatic storage balancing for the shares I have duplication turned on for.

I did not expect them to have a second version out so soon though. I will have to check on that and see if I can get into the beta for that one too.

Ok, Tibs, I don't know why I even thought I could assume you knew what you were talking about. What you read about is Windows Home Server "Power Pack 1". It is a minor, free update to existing home servers that adds some new features and refines a few things that already exist in WHS.

This is not a new version, nor is it called Windows Home Server '08. You need to understand that Wikipedia is not always a reliable source of information and that you should better try to understand what you're reading rather than just take it for what is printed. The best piece of advice I can give you, and anyone else, is to always question everything!

Anyways, when in doubt, try to find the original source for something. Here is a post from the WHS team blog about Power Pack 1 that gives the true scope of what this update is. http://blogs.technet.com/homeserver/archive/2008/01/06/windows-home-server-power-pack-1.aspx

Yeah I know wikipedia is really not a reliable source, because anyone and everyone can change and manipulate it. I really would like to try 08, but I don't have a 80gb drive just sitting around. I wish I kept all mine but I sold them on craigslist. Made some money but now I am regretting it.

Ok, Tibs, I don't know why I even thought I could assume you knew what you were talking about.

It was the little voice in your head. We'll just go with that. But hey thanks for that link.

There is no '08 version! It is essentially WHS 1.0 Service Pack 1. If you want to just try out the software, it won't give you a true trial, but you could always install the trial version in VMWare or Virtual PC. You can download a 120 day trial version from the WHS website at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/eval.mspx
