Title: The ATI R700 preliminary Benchmarks

For the past year and a half ATI have had a tough time competing with Nvidia at the high end of the graphics card market. Products such as the 2900 and 3800 series struggled to perform at levels comparable to the GeForce 8800, 9800 and GTX 280 however ATI did eventually work out a good pricing structure which made them attractive to consumers.

More recently the launch of the 4800 series did two things. Firstly ATI had a card which performed at a similar level to the second fastest GTX, the 260. Secondly both the 4850 and 4870 were priced very aggressively which is tempting to those looking at a great price/performance ratio.

So what of a product to compete with the GTX 280? Well that is why we are here today, in the last day or so ATI supplied us with an early sample of the R700 giving us the opportunity to see how it compares to cards which are already on the market.

Post by: The Nstuff on July 25, 2008, 03:35:44 PM: although, comparing a R700 (aka 4870 X2) with a GTX 280 is apples to apples in that both are on a single pcie slot, the fact that they don't compare it to GTX280 in SLI is a little misleading.

This review has the GTX280 in SLI as well. Still, the 4870 X2 is freaking amazing, especially when considering its multi-monitor support.

Post by: The Nstuff on August 04, 2008, 07:17:27 PM: I really missed the competition... Nvidia fell into the same hole of sucking on an old tit while AMD kept tripping on their own feet. I kept thinking they were actually working hard on something to follow up the 8800gtx with... but it took them almost 2 years to come up with something faster and only did so when AMD started making rumblings that the 4xxx series would be kicking ass.

I had a MSI 5900XT with a Arctic Cooling NV3 on that thing. I bought it for $158 on newegg about 4 years ago when I built my rig.

and it died not too long after that due to extreme heat problems. :lol: Couldn't help it Tibs.

Post by: Dwg115 on August 13, 2008, 06:40:04 AM: yea and i hear they fixed the way the 2 gpu's communicate back and forth so there's no microstuttering. Apparently the 9800gx2 suffers from microstuttering a lot. not sure what microstuttering is check this small article.
