Oculus Rift is making strides in the gaming world
« on: April 03, 2013, 07:16:35 AM »
If you haven't heard of the Oculus Rift by now, then perhaps you need to find out about this thing called the Internet and how it has a lot more information on it than bewbies and funny pictures of cats. But just in case you haven't heard, let me fill you in. It looks awesome. And highly impressive.

Oculus Rift differs from some of its predecessors by seriously reducing the lag time between head movement and in game movement. Also it would appear the rampant migraines from the Virtual Boy days have been eliminated.

Oculus Rift is, by definition of the company making them, "a ground-breaking virtual reality headset for immersive gaming", and they look ready to deliver on this statement. Some of the most recent news to come from the company is they have teamed up with the developers behind Team Fortress 2, a dearly beloved game here at FITES.

Purchasing a developer kit for $300 will not only get you your own Oculus Rift, but it will also get you a new hate in TF2! Just to leave you with an idea of what is possible right now with OR, check out this video. And yes, he is looking one way while his weapon points another way.

Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

Remember they are telling the public to NOT get the developer kit unless you are actually developing games or apps.  The final retail version will likely be higher resolution and a larger lcd panel with a wider viewing angle.

I just want to design controller interfaces. You can't very well sit at a desk with a system that allows for such a free range of motion.

I cant wait! Still enjoying MWO despite the beta bugs. I will agree it gets grindy outside of double XP weekends but they are making a lot of progress. I think it is about 6 months from going from open beta to live.

Oh I want one so bad but money is tight right now. I have to wait for the consumer version in Q3 2014 or at least the Dev 2.0 version in Q3 2014. Both will be miles ahead of the current dev version for hopefully similar prices.

I know that his tag was that he wanted to keep it affordable for the consumer...so let's see if it will go above the $300 mark like the dev kits are.  I want one as well, but if the retail version goes above that pricepoint you can count me out of that race.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

I would have to try it out before I can say with certainty how much I would pay for the final version. It's also tough because we don't know what features the final version will hold. I would definitely pay  somewhere in the range of $300 to $500 depending on specs. I guess we just have to play the waiting game.
