Lucid's GPU load-balancer storms IDF
« on: August 23, 2008, 03:31:04 AM »
When a company called Lucid unveiled a web site promising a revolutionary new technology that could deliver near-perfect performance scaling for multiple GPUs, independent of GPU type, we were initially skeptical. Their claims sounded odd and perhaps too good to be true. But not only were they present on the show floor at IDF, they were showing a demo of working silicon. Remarkably enough, it appears they may just be on to something big.

It's OK. You're a graphic artist. No one expects you to know what this means.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

If I am reading the summary correctly (which I did not read the entire article), this project will allow you to use multiple GPU's from different manufacturer's in tandem, like an SLI setup but you could use and ATI card along with an nVidia card.  If I'm wrong...well then I'm wrong.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

Close.  You can't use an ATI card and a NVidia card in tandem.  You can use a 8500 and an 8900 in tandem though.  And each card will contribute it's maximum ability to the system.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

Yes your wrong only because each card must use the same driver.

Because Lucid is simply intercepting and then making OpenGL or DirectX calls, the Hydra 100 is purportedly GPU-agnostic, unconcerned and unaware whether it's working with a Radeon, a GeForce or anything else. (In fact, one of the firm's primary financial backers is Intel's capital investment arm.) One limitation is that the GPUs involved must all use the same graphics driver, so mixing a GeForce with a Radeon won't work.

Sure sure beat me to it as a post!

After I read the article I understood wtf was going on, but from the initial bits I was like eff that I'm not reading crap about stuff I don't understand so I can get more confused.

I was just about to give you a smack down for thread necromancy, but you're on-topic and relevant ;)

Let's see how the benchmarks hold up on this. Any idea of pricing on this? I wouldn't want a $400 mobo just to get this feature.
