Id Software co-founder, game programming genius,
rocket scientist and overall really smart guy John Carmack will be
joining Oculus VR as their new Chief Technology Officer. In his new role, John looks forward to "problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!” Mr. Carmack will be working out of Oculus' new Dallas office set to open soon.
Representatives for id Software confirmed to
CNET that "John has long been interested in the work at Oculus VR and wishes to spend time on that project. The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected".
Earlier this year Oculus lost one of their co-founders, Andrew Reisse, when he was struck by a car involved in a high speed police chase. The release date for the Oculus VR headset is still unknown but is widely believed to be available sometime next year.
