HP != PC Business
« on: August 18, 2011, 04:44:15 PM »

Today, during HP's quarterly earnings report, announced that they would be shutting down all operations regarding the Palm-related business (Touchpad, Pre, etc).

HP also indicated that it is looking into "strategic alternatives" to the Personal Computer, ie:  they are going to pull an IBM and spin off their PC and storage units and focus on service solutions.

From their press release:

"As part of the transformation, HP announced that its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for the company's Personal Systems Group. HP will consider a broad range of options that may include, among others, a full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction."

"HP will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. The devices have not met internal milestones and financial targets. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward."

Possibly related...

Best Buy is sitting on 200,000 HP Touchpads:

  Also HP bought EDS some time ago.  With EDS's track record coupled with HP's ability to tank everything but printer sales I can already smell the failure brewing here.

The fail started when they hired Carly Fiorina and bought Compaq. This is just the the fail whale coming into the beach to die.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

They really should just spin off the printer and enterprise tape parts of the company and let the rest implode on itself.

I'm really saddened about Palm.  Great company that pretty much  started the market of smartphones that we enjoy today, just some hooooorible management along the way.  Hell, the basic design of the iphone OS is straight out of the older Palm OS.

So after spending 1.2BILLION dollars for Palm, HP kills the ENTIRE product line.  There might have been some hope that webOS might live on somewhere else, but then they are wanting to sell off the PC business too.  Their excuse for doing this?  They wanted to be #2 and quickly.  So they set up these insanely lofty goals which were almost designed to fail and after their initial product doesn't do well, they kill off the entire $1.2B investment.  If I was the collective share holders, i'd be selling selling selling as the management obviously has no clue what they are doing (and as sully pointed out, hasn't had a clue for a long long time).
