Video Game content makers on YouTube are taking a hit
« on: December 12, 2013, 12:31:48 PM »
There's a developing story about how YouTube has once again changed their way they handle copyright claims. It appears that large numbers of content producers are being nailed with strikes and having videos taken down. Here's a link to a rather long video talking about the issue:

YouTuber Controversy with TotalBiscuit, FarFromSubtle, itmeJP, Fork Parker and Adam Sessler!

Have any content producers had problems with copyright claims? Anyone seeing some nasty grams? I'll put up more details on this as I get them. I'm someone interested in making game related content on YouTube so this a big deal.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

This is extremism.  The people/bots making the claims are also saying (nay: demanding) that any and all income made off the videos they flagged be handed over to the company making the claim.

Angry Joe's rant is impressive: Youtube Copyright Disaster! Angry Rant

This needs to stop.  It's exploitation of a broken system, pure and simple.  YouTube needs to stop this or risk losing a significant revenue stream as game content producers flock elsewhere.

Duder, you, along with the eXtelevision broadcast crew have experience in this field. Is Twitch the latest and greatest service content makers will flood to, or is there something about the YouTube user base and features that will keep content providers there?

And if anyone else on these forums knows of other video content producers it would be great if you could let them know about this conversation. Video game content and streaming are a large part of the future of esports, and LANs will be a part of that also.

I never understood peoples YouTube channels or how someone spouting their thoughts about a video game or product can be monetized.  Frankly I am sick of the massive amount of un-boxing videos or "reviews" that are essentially an un-boxing video where they read the marketing claims on the box and add a few comments.  I think showing off a recent purchase or pandering to someone who gave you free s**t is garbage.

This goes as well for video game reviews where the trailer and per-rendered video is shown while someone waxes poetically about their thoughts on the game  I think the COD:Ghosts videos where people were stroking off to terrible textures that haven't even been downloaded yet really proves how useless game reviews have become.

I am pretty indifferent to the massive butt hurt being dealt out here, seems like Youtube is flushing some turds down a overflowing bowl.  I would care if there was some entertaining or valuable/informative content like Zero Punctuations reviews, sucks that game streamers are getting caught up in this mess (Looking at you duder & eXtv crew)

Well, I think there are two issues here about what you mention. One being that a such you think "let's plays" and comments over cut scenes are lame, there is a market for it. People want to watch it, to the tune of millions of viewers.

One of the larger issues is the YouTube filter system targeting things that have been cleared as okay for a long time. Things like royalty free music that has been declared free to use by the composers is suddenly triggering take downs and flags. Game devs that have long declared their games okay for videos and streaming are having to tell their players to immediately contest any flags from YouTube because they have no clue what is going on. Some devs rely on these videos as a means of continued free advertising for their products.

There is also the question of YouTube's process. It's as if anyone can file a copyright claim without having to prove the content is really theirs, and YouTube will immediately flag or take it down. It's a tirade I could go on about at great length that includes conflicting case law about copyright infringement, but for now I will say this is a giant mess.
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

Yeah, the larger question is the broken copyright system.  But if a channels content is publisher provided media with the sound removed and somebody spouting nonsense from their cakehole then I see nothing of value.  In fact I would argue that fair use is being exploited there.  Its only channels whose content is the video game trailer or other media (prerecorded game play, rendered videos) is being flagged.

I also understand that this is some folks livelihood, and that certainly sucks.
