Title: E3 2007: Unreal Tournament 3 Hands-On
Post by: kona on July 12, 2007, 07:20:06 AM
GameSpot previews Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 at E3 2007.

This first-person shooter appears to be running quite well on the PlayStation 3, with plenty of graphical detail from top to bottom, all running at a good, firm frame rate. The demo station we saw was running a standard deathmatch against bots, allowing us to get a good feel for the controls. R1 and L1 handle your primary and alternate fire. R2 is used for dodging, something that required you to double tap the movement keys on the PC. Epic’s Jeff Morris, who was on hand to talk about the game, commented that he’s been dodging much more frequently on the PS3 due to this easy-to-use controller mapping.

Aside from the PS3 version looking to be on par with the PC version, the other key thing to know is that the PS3 version of the game will have support for mods and other user-created content, in a way that sounds like it will be a first for consoles. Mods built for the PC version will work on the PS3 version of the game. Right now, Epic is testing this functionality by copying the content onto a memory stick and then copying that to the PS3 hard drive, but they’re hoping to get the PC removed from that equation and make mod and map downloading a part of the PS3 version. To speed up loading overall, the game can be completely installed to the PS3 hard drive, but you’ll still need to have the disc in the drive for copy protection purposes.

Yep. Interesting though that they'll be releasing the xbox version in early 2008, and the PC and PS3 version in November of this year. I guess they figured they couldn't compete with Halo 3.

And the UT3 trailer (http://files.filefront.com/ut3+e307+trailerhd/;8022993;;/fileinfo.html) that was released yesterday is totally kickass.

Here's a few cool new things that I've heard about UT3 since E3 started:

- There will be 4 player co-op for the SP campaign

- There will be deployables, as well as deployable physics volumes. For example: a Slow volume that you could place over the flag in your base that will slow any object(including weapon projectiles) that passes through the volume. Makes players trying to grab the flag an easy target for snipers.

- The blood and gore from UT99 makes a comeback. Bodies sliced in half, location-specific gibbage, 3D rendered blood(Gears of War style), etc.

- Another comeback from UT99 is the impact hammer. You will be to "jump" with the chargeable primary fire(charge up, aim at ground, off you go). The secondary fire is an EMP burst for disabling vehicles.

- The biorifle now has the effect of disintegrating your opponents.

- The Darkwalker(those war of the world tripod-looking vehicles) may be considered a "super vehicle" but incentive for killing one(other than the obvious) just got a whole lot better. When one dies, it releases a timed powerup that makes the weapon you are currently holding on pickup a one-shot kill.

- Teleporters are now portals. You can see through to the other side. The transition is seemless. Portal mod anyone?

- Oh, and visuals that make Gears of War look ugly.

This game looks incredible.  It may have the best chance of forcing the most pc upgrades than any game yet.

I have a feeling Crysis will be pushing the minimum requirements up farther than UT3. Epic has done extensive optimization so that even the lowish-end systems(6600-6800 cards) could be playable(25+fps).

On a side note: For those who haven't heard, Gears of War will be coming to the PC this year as well.

I am definetly waiting on Gears of War. Will definetly upgrade the pc for that.
