Day Two of the Steam Universe... pretty interesting actually.
« on: September 25, 2013, 03:20:38 PM »
So it's not the greatest of fanfare that I was hoping for. I was hoping to actually see a picture of the new Steam Box, but I guess it can wait. This is the point where some would argue that I already have a Steam Box, and it's called my PC.

What was interesting about this is Steam has stated that in 2014 "there will be multiple SteamOS machines to choose from, made by different manufacturers." So they already have manufacturers of hardware lined up. Steam is, on their own, achieving the "one console" world that many gamers have asked for. No more excluding some of your friends because they own a different console. Now, you can all play your favorite games together across a variety of machines from different manufacturers.

I see this as a benefit to consumers. Hardware manufacturers get to focus on their hardware, and what makes them unique. Some people can go for performance; others for style; and others for quiet operation. More choice has typically been great for consumers. Software companies now get to focus on their titles. It lessens the drive to become an "exclusive title" for any one console, although I don't doubt people will find a way.

I'm not excited about the super limited beta run, but I've never been much of an early adopter. I'm hoping the idea catches on long enough for my kids to get their own Steam Boxes gift wrapped and under the tree. The question is, can we count on Steam OS and Steam Box to have LAN support? (I think so.)
Eventually something cool will go in here. It's a matter of time.

I find the announcements boring. I expected them and they boring. It just doesn't appeal to me; however, I'm not the target audience for this stuff. I'm happy gaming on my PC and I have no interest in playing games on my television in my living room. Its looking like the last announcement will be some sort of controller or whatever.....not Source 2 like I had hoped for. Bummer
