PHILADELPHIA, June 12, 2008 - Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSK (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=cmcsk), CMCSA (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=cmcsa)), the nation's leading provider of entertainment, information and communications, today announced it is increasing upstream speeds nationally for its Performance and Performance Plus residential high-speed Internet customers at no additional cost. Comcast will nearly triple the upload speed of its 6 Mbps / 384 Kbps Performance tier to 6 Mbps / 1 Mbps and more than double the upload speed of its 8 Mbps / 768 Kbps Performance Plus tier to 8 Mbps / 2 Mbps.
"As the Internet and its functionality evolves, so will our services and offerings," said Mitch Bowling, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Comcast High-Speed Internet, Comcast Cable. "We've made a number of complimentary speed increases over the last few years and we focused this latest increase on upstream speeds so our customers can take even better advantage of the ever-expanding amount of interactive applications the Internet has to offer."
Along with increased upstream speeds, Comcast customers can enjoy faster download speeds with Comcast's PowerBoost technology, also at no additional cost. With PowerBoost technology, Comcast customers can get up to 12 Mbps downloads on the Performance tier and up to 16 Mbps downloads on the Performance Plus tier for files such as videos, games, music and digital photos.
Increasing upstream speeds is one of several speed enhancements Comcast has implemented in 2008. Earlier this year, Comcast announced it would be evolving from broadband to wideband with the deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) technology, which sets a new standard for delivering high-speed Internet service across fiber-optic cable networks. Comcast recently launched its first DOCSIS 3.0 market in the Twin Cities, offering residents and businesses one of the fastest broadband services available in the U.S. today: with up to 50 Mbps download speed and 5 Mbps uploads. Comcast expects to deliver even faster speeds of up to 100 Mbps to its customers over the next two years with the capability of delivering higher speeds of 160 Mbps or more in the future.
**Editors Note: In Central PA areas with FiOS competition, even higher speeds than these can already be found, with download speeds of up to 16 Mbps down / 2 Mbps up (known as the "Blast!" speed tier (http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2008/06/09/daily30.html)). DOCSIS 3.0 is supposed to be available available in this area by the end of 2008.

lots of negativity there. Especially considering f3ar0n and I go way past any dload cap these articles speak of. Maybe some markets have them but york does not or at least i can say that I do not.

DOCSIS 3.0 will require a new modem from what I've seen so far. I don't know of any modem manufacturer's that will be offering a firmware upgrade currently, but I suppose that will be up to the individual manufacturer's to decide if they will offer that support or not.

And I just recently bought a modem to get out of renting one. I hope it will still be $3 a month....

i've been using Comcast's "performance plus" tier for the last 5 months now. I went from 5mb/384k to 16mb/2mb. So this upgraded speed has been available for some time, at least in the hershey and palmyra area. Heck, when I called comcast to threaten to move to Verizon, i was talking to a dude at a call center in York, and he's the one that ugpraded me to the new speeds and cut my comcast bill by $30. Good stuff.

Yes, as I noted above, the 16/2 tier has been around in FiOS competitive areas for a while now, including Hershey, Harrisburg, and Mechanicsburg areas and surrounds. Those same areas will be the first to see DOCSIS 3.0 also.
The modem rental fee has been $3/month for as long as I can remember. In fact, prices for the internet service haven't gone up or down for as long as I can remember either.

All you guys suck! The choices I have for internet in my apartment are Antietam Cable and Verizon DSL.
Antietam Cable is only a 1.5MB down 256KB up service, unless you upgrade to the business package for an additional $32 a month. Once upgraded your speeds are 3MB down 768KB up.
Verizon DSL is supposed to be 3MB down and 768KB up, but I really only ever get 2.0-2.2MB down.
Long story short, I hope you all die in a fire. <3

Ya, I'm only like 200-250ft from my local node, so that really shouldn't account for all of the bandwidth loss that I see. I just believe that Verizon's service blows.

that was actually after re-testing 3 times in a row to try to make sure i wasn't using the blast/burst speed boost. My download stayed around 23mb and my upload ranged from 2.0 to 2.3mb

I just believe that Verizon's service blows.
And yet, Verizon's ISP service ratings are still higher than Comcast, with Verizon DSL just barely above Comcast cable, and Verizon FIOS being at the very top.
Verizon is also boosting their FIOS speeds next week.
"The appetite for bandwidth shows no signs of slowing down. Neither will we," Strigl said in his remarks. "We've already had successful trials of the 100-megabit home, which will be a reality faster than anybody thinks."
The 50/20-Mbps and 20/20-Mbps FIOS services have been available in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. Verizon will expand those offerings to new Verizon FiOS customers in parts of California, Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington, replacing existing offerings of 30/15-Mbps and 15/15-Mbps services.
The midtier connection speed in those markets for new customers is being increased to 20/5-Mbps from 15/2-Mbps, and the basic service tier is being increased to 10/2-Mbps from 5/2-Mbps.
I know that doesn't help you with your internet issues, sorry Petch hehe, but still cool for me =X

Thanks agent. I've read similar but nowhere with the detail of what you found. This seriously could not have come at a better time. My 6 months of having the comcast premier speed for $30 is about up and i was going to have to beg them to extend it or to switch to verizon. Now, i'll either have a lot better ammo to get comcast to keep prices low, or i'll just switch.
About 8 months ago, my apartments had Verizon come in and pre-wire every apartment for fios. My closet already has a new electrical outlet and all coax (and phone lines) pulled to one spot, so all they have to do is bring in the modem and hook it up.
