Priced at $299 the Radeon HD 4870 is clocked 20% higher and has 81% more memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 4850. The GPU clock speed improvement is simply due to better cooling as the 4870 ships with a two-slot cooler. The memory bandwidth improvement is due to the Radeon HD 4870 using GDDR5 memory instead of GDDR3 used on the 4850 (and GDDR4 for 3870); the result is a data rate equal to 4x the memory clock speed or 3.6Gbps. The Radeon HD 4870 and 4850 both use a 256-bit memory bus like the 3870 before it (as well as NVIDIA's competing GeForce 9800 GTX), but total memory bandwidth on the 4870 ends up being 115.2GB/s thanks to the use of GDDR5. Note that this is more memory bandwidth than the GeForce GTX 260 which has a much wider 448-bit memory bus, but uses GDDR3 devices.

I love my Nvidia cards but this type of price/performance is kickarse!!!! the only thing nvidia really has at this point IMO is Physx and the gtx 280's performance in crysis. other then that get 2 4870's in CF and crush everything out there fo cheaper then 1 gtx 280.

I am wanting to build myself a spider system. I was just waiting for ATI to release something great, and at a affordable price. Any word on a dual gpu 4 series card? I am sure that it is in the works.

Think I'm going to go with the 4850's better price and just as good performance

these 48xx series are incredible. My 8800gtx still plays everything out there i can possibly throw at it. These new cards are faster and 1/4 of the cost of when the 8800gtx was new. Simple amazing. Cypher and I are actually half considering getting one of the ATi cards simply for the monthly driver releases. We're just fed up with nvidia's horrible driver treatment.

yea with prices this low it's almost too much to refuse. Im thinking of grabbing one just to play with and if i don't like it i might sell it.. Im sure I'll like it though.

I am afraid to switch again...

Hehehe

If you didnt hear, and I don't have the link handy, but I think some guy in Israel (possibly) managed to hack the new ATI chips to run PhysX. Didn't get all the details, maybe look it up later...

Man this is tempting, but I think I should probably buy a new CPU before I upgrade my graphics card.

Got my 2 Sapphire HD4850's running in crossfire, and I love it! Great Price.

you should post some of your benchmarks!!!

"you should post some of your benchmarks!!!"
I agree, especially since I just bought an asus 4850 from newegg for $145 (after rebate).

I will, im just waiting for the official 8.7 to be released, so there is proper support. None of this hotfix, and beta crap.
