Title: Tournaments for upcoming lan
Post by: Leech on February 10, 2009, 01:19:53 PM
i know that the "normal" layout of teams is usually 5v5 (CS:S and CoD4)
so why is it that they are 6v6?
personally imo 6 people on a team seems to change some maps around a little in both games
cause now there is an extra person

also
single elimination?
what about finals? best of 3? or is that still single?

im just curious about the reasoning behind all this
im not saying that its a bad idea to do it
just wondering to see why
 :help:

Currently we have single elimination set because we are unsure how many teams will be showing up for each tournament, and we wanted to ensure there was enough time to complete all tournament brackets.  This also allows us not to limit the amount of teams entering the tournaments, if we locked down double elimination from the start we would have to limit the number of teams allowed to enter.

If we see that there is enough time for the allotted teams to do double elimination, then it will be changed, but until all the team sign-ups are finalized we won't know how much time is needed.

As for the 6v6, I'll let someone else answer that....

Quote from: Rathe
Because the other tourney's are that way and if they do it 6v6 eveyone can keep the same teams.
That is correct...

The idea is that you can bring 5 buds, or make 5 new friends at the event, and always have a team.  It would suck to have 2 tournaments where you are on a team of 6, and then have 1 player get bumped from before the CS tourney, and not have a team to play on!

That was the idea behind it.
TF

I underestand your concern.. the reason we left it as 6v6 is that since the other team tourney's are 6v6, we figured it might be nice to have teams stick together... rather than having to cut 1 person from your team just for that tourney.  This way, you can find 5 other people to be on your team, and you always have a group together.

Yes, you can always play with less people if you choose... but I am sure that there will be people who don't have teams, and are looking to join one.  That is left up to the team captains.

This was to let people keep their 6 person teams from a while back when we used to play BF1942 and the like. Now it's more of a staple of our show. We have people bring their 5 person team. Their option to play a man down or they can pick up someone who doesn't have a team so they get a chance to play as well. Also, 6 person teams mix things up a bit. Most people are used to playing 5v5. You drop in another person and things need to change. We have gotten this question many times from people who want to argue that it's "not CAL" or not standard. Whatever. It's not going to change since it's been this way for a while and we have yet to EVER hear a GOOD argument otherwise. We are here to have fun. I believe that our rule set maximizes fun and gets people to know one another. What's the point of the LAN party if you only talk and play with the friends you brought? Heck, we would make L4D and RockBand 6v6 if it wasn't a limitation of the game. ;)

Can I turn this one around a bit, as I'm curious in the other direction...why not have 6 players? Could you not use your same 5 player strategy and assign the 6th player to be a free roamer as re-enforcements or as a surprise attacker, or an extra defender, or hidden sniper, or.....the possibilities for that 6th person are endless.

As leech stated, just wondering why.

WARNING: If this thread becomes a flame war it will be locked faster than you can say "OMGWTFBBQ It has to be 5v5!?"

I believe that the sixth man provides balance to the game. Would also stress that this is a LAN PARTY, not CAL. Sully I would suggest just locking it anyway. As soon as the other CS CAL (CS is more popular then any other mainstream game) see this thread. Then everyone is going to be in a uproar about this. And with three weeks to go you would not want anymore stress and BS to come your way now would you. It is 6v6 for a reason and we are sticking to it.

No, I'd like to see some constructive, thoughtful conversation on the topic. When and if the flames rage, then I'll lock it. Until then, I invite any and all to contribute and elaborate on the finer points of 5 players/team versus 6 players/team.

tbh the only reason I would say 5v5 would be to encourage more "teams" from CAL and the likes to show up, but you guys are right that there is no real difference in strats for most maps when you add the extra guy in, it just generally makes defense a little easier.

Ok, but why would 6-player teams discourage a CAL team from coming? This is afterall, a LAN Party. We're not part of CAL, so there's nothing that happens at our LAN Parties of any consequence to CAL standings or reputation or anything. We game for the sake of gaming and good fun.

I know in the past we've had teams come in and think they were going to wipe the floor, end up losing in the first round to a clearly superior team, get ticked off, and leave after only a couple of hours. There was still 35+ hours left in the LAN and they just packed up and left.

That is a completely wrong attitude to have coming into a FITES LAN. We are first and foremost about having a fun time; always have been. Secondly, it's getting to meet other people you have a common interest with (gaming) and maybe finding some new friendships out of the whole experience. That's also where the 6th person on the team comes into play; it may be someone you pick up out of the PUG pool to fill the 6th spot. Maybe that 6th person ends up making a critical kill or score that pushes your 5-man team over the top. Tournaments, I think, come in a distant 3rd to the other two, not because the tournaments are insignificant, but because the fun and camaraderie are just that far up the ladder.

Maybe I am speaking with an uninformed perspective (I don't do clans) when I say: 5v5 or 6v6 WHO CARES.
So long as it's not 12v12.

Good call Shoctor. It's silly to go to a LAN and only hang out with the few people you come in with. It seems like at every LAN I have ever been to, there is always one individual person sitting in the corner playing some completely obscure rts or puzzle game by themself. What is up with that.

Maybe I will change my avatar to theSIXTHman in honor of this thread.

i see the reasoning behind doing 6v6 not 5v5

but cool

oh and btw... that was a question all out of curiosity
i wasn't trying to cause a flame war (even though it didnt happen)
and i wasn't complaining about the rules
just wondering  8)

Hehe, it's cool. It's just that we've had them in the past over the lame 5v5 issue, so we're on our guard about it. ;)

And if all else fails, I'll probably just be pugging most games so I can just be picked up as a 6th as an asset or a handicap (CoD4).

:P

The cvars are posted on the tourny page... I think it's not fade to black, just lock to team. (Like CAL rules before they vanished. ;) )
