I just wanted to let you guys know we had a great time. I know we were stressed for power but I think that there was an issue that may of caused some computers (laptops and desktops) to reduce performance and quite potentially cause the switches to reduce their performance levels. We had rather bad performance overall in Unreal Tournament 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Mass Effect 2 over the duration of the lan. I personally know that both Mass Effect 2 and Unreal Tournament 3 ran perfectly fine on our laptops previously as well as after the event. We did no changes to resolve the issue. However during the lan their performance was degraded in both single and multiplayer modes. I think it is something that should be put into consideration for next year. We had tons of fun this past weekend and look forward to fites next year!
-
That's odd, because on both of my machines (I had to run home and get my backup when my primary died. GRRRRRR!) UT3, CoD4 and TF2 ran wonderfully across the network. I had no problems connecting to any of the Fites tourney or free play servers. Smooth, uninterrupted gameplay on my end. Go Fites!
Great event, though. A little better than last year, but not by much. At least this time I could get some decent sleep as nobody was yelling "SCIENCE!!!" for half an hour. Oh yeah, my sister had a good time despite not having spent as much time on CoD and UT as most everyone else.
Because I was sitting 2 seats away from a friend with a home server, I still vote that we should've had access to Gig-E networking simply because of some of the file sizes that were on DC, but that's really my only gripe. It's not even a gripe or complaint as much as it would have been something nice to have.
So here's looking forward to another event a year from now. Next time get some PSU's to give away so when mine dies I can win a new one and replace it right away. :-D
-
This weekend was much more enjoyable (The last one was enjoyable too :-D) for a couple of obvious reasons.
1. It was no where near as hot as it was before. Those fans helped a ton. Very much appreciated!
2. The additional space was a big plus, which also helped with managing the heat.
3. Lots of little extra tournaments (Armagedatron or however you spell it and Super Smash Bros)
I don't know of many suggestions I can make. The fact that you host a three day LAN at a hotel, which happens to have a grill & bar also, is a great convenience. The 40 dollar discount on the room was a welcome bonus. My only gripe was that my roommate refused to go despite him paying. He really missed out.
I'm still recovering. When I think of more to say I'll hope back in.

Thank You for hosting another great lan Fites! Your entire staff did a outstanding job. From the table setups and layout, air flow, dedicated servers, consoles, ub3r emulator setup, tourneys, free schwag, prizes, everything came together for one epic weekend. As always, my family and friends and I had a great time and we look forward to the next one.
These lan events are a great escape from RL and a blast getting together with fellow gamers both young and old to share in fun fragging times. The DC shares are also a great bonus to the event so thanks to everyone out there that participates. Thanks to Everyone at the lan for the comaradery as well as for getting the munchies for girl scout cookies on Saturday, my lil sister-in-law unloaded over 120 boxes and she says thanks for the purchases!
Now go catch up on some rest Fites staff as I'm sure some of you didn't get much this weekend, especially for that BrokenShadow guy, damn he needs some beauty rest as he's one big ugly beast :elaugh: not that I can talk :hehemean:
Peace

Why didn't someone come up to the help desk and ask for.......help? This could have been resolved quickly if were only reported. We had plenty of extra switches so we could have easily replaced it to make sure it wasn't a faulty switch.
-
Great event, though. A little better than last year, but not by much.
IMO, this years event was far better than last years. We opened on time, no network issues, tourneys went very smoothly, only 1 issue with power and it wasn't that we didn't have enough, there was just some daisy chaining going on. Also, prizes! There was a metric Crap ton of excellent prizes. What did we have...5 cases to give away? A very nice Mobo/proc combo. Lot's of really nice Slappa bags not to mention the Ton's of schwag everyone got.
More space, more cooling, more people....just moar....and better.
Yeah, I'd say it was A LOT better than last year's.
-
Not to mention we had a console SECTION this year. Last year we had consoles, but they weren't centralized, and nowhere near as organized. Epic mad props to Ogar, Jinu and Cypher for that.
-
I thought it was a definitive improvement over last year. The size was great, I would love to see some more fun competitions on the MAME setup, i think that is underutilized for how rockin it is. Tournaments went much better than last year, and I definately felt like I had more elbow room this year. Thanks guys for a great event.
-
I certainly hope there's a super street fighter 4 tourney next year and that we can use all the characters so some of us can play to the full extent of our power and capability.
oh, who am I kidding. I just have the hots for cammy.

This is definitely the kind of thing to report to us. We are there to help and make the LAN the best experience you can have.
Speaking for myself, I had no issues in my section in terms of power or game performance. I was keeping an eye out on my system's power draw, the state of the power coming into my supply, my network connection, and its stability. Everything looked very clean and actually better than last year if I remember correctly.
-
In regards to the power issue, I actually lost a power supply which was working fine previously to making the trip to the LAN party. A staffer plugged me in, I went to fire up the box, got a light for a split second, and then nothing. Whether this was a function of it dying a natural death or something else, I have no idea; we went to Best Buy and got another one and that was that. I thought I'd throw it out there.
Second, I liked the improved Rock Band 2 tournament format. However, one thing that the change from a band selecting songs from the start to randomly chosen songs does is it puts the bands who go earlier at a huge disadvantage, compared to the bands who have time to go back to their computers and listen to songs a couple times to prepare. I can't help but think if there'd been even a half hour between when the songs for the round were announced and the first performance, the outcome might have been different, and the tournament as a whole more competitive and improved in quality.
The fans were a huge improvement; likewise the designated console area. The smaller tournaments were cool too, like the Home Run Derby and Smash Bros. I did wonder why there weren't actual trophies for them as they WERE announced tournaments, but we can't have everything we want I guess ;)
Overall, a very positive and improved experience from last year, with room to improve even more next year!
-
I had a great time guys. I didn't suffer from power issues, but then again my table wasn't completely filled. The tournaments were great, although my team always fell into last place. ;) I give kudos to those who work hard on the console area setup.
-
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the LAN. We at Fites strive to give you the best we can and we actually start the preparation for each LAN at the end of the last one. Every year we feel we do a little bit better and we're always open to new ideas.
-
Great times were had. Muffindog and JFE vs team :D was intense. No issues with anyone in my group. Fites is a great lan organization with really cool staff. Hopefully I'll see some of you at Pittco! :D
p.s. Turk is now a lan celebrity.

I was reading your post and wondering to myself why a spike might come thorugh your 20amp drop and only affect your pc and leave the other 4 alone. Im not saying it cant happen. Im not an electrician but I would think that every device on that circuit would have been impacted by it. Just a thought. Im not trying to deny what may have happened.

I don't think he was saying he got a spike from the power we provided DWG. I think there is a bigger possibility that during the moving of the computer that something shifted or moved that shouldn't have and blew the PSU. The same thing happened to my Server at the LAN and there was that one computer that would power up while laying on it's side but not while standing up. Moving computers always does strange things to them.
-
Yeah. Cypher knows ALL about that. :hehemean:
-
Yeah. Cypher knows ALL about that. :hehemean:
 Good one Agent.
He told me he just got that motherboard a week before the event back from RMA. So Cypher and myself are in agreement; never buy Gigabyte boards again. His is going to hell and might died a month before the event.
-
Yeah I was filing that remark under "things that happened regarding power" instead of "you guys fried my b0x". No blame laid!
-
oh ok, my bad. Agent4054 said he'd buy you a new PSU. I'd recommend the corsair hx1000.
-
I'd recommend the corsair hx1000.
That is what I have in mine, excellent quality.
-
That's because Turk's the shizz. LoLs. I'm a little jealous he wanted to have Czar's babies though. Tear
Overall I think this was o e of our most successful events we've ever hosted. I look forward to hearing the feedback and seeing everyone for future FITES events. Big thanks to everyone who came out.

One major gripe!!!!
I need more opportunities to rip unmentionables off of my body in a Hulk Hogan like manor :p.

I apologize for not mentioning it during the event but I didn't know if there was a legitimate issue until after the event was done and we got home. All the other games ran fine. It was just the newer ones so I mostly threw it out as an issue with the system performance in general. I did recall that UT3 and ME2 ran fine on the system previously but it had been nearly a year for UT3 personally and I only watched someone else play ME2 with the same exact system before the event and it appeared to run fine. We had tons of fun regardless and it was indeed a huge improvement over the prior year.
I apologize if I seemed accusatory in any way as it wasn't intended to be and our systems (I found out later on) is designed to downclock the system in the event of low power input. Don't ask me why that is.
EDIT: ME2 and COD: MW2 was purchased during the event so I had no way to know their actual performance on the system during the event. ME2 ran ok save for some odd lag every now and again.

I thought the L4D2 Tourney was run excellently, no complaints on the servers, and they even let us play different maps on the final
The CSS tourney however was run poorly, had to wait for a bit to get everything lived up, the admin did not even watch the finals, as after a server glitch, we needed to run up and get him to quit a game to restart the server, it seems if the guy wanted to be a CSS admin, at least he could be interested in the finals for CSS. also we heard complaints when we wanted to switch maps on the finals, when it really had no bearing time wise on the other tournaments. The set up was fine, but the way they explained how they wanted to have the tourney be quicker, and didn't even use quicker round settings was weird to me.
Other than that, the speeds were great, the power was great.

CSS is always a hassle every year. EVERY year. The staff loves to throw a major lan.. so much in fact that several staffers didn't even bring their rigs. They wanted to focus their attention on YOU, the gamers, so you can have the best possible time.
FITES is a ..different.. kind of LAN. I'm sure by now, people realize that the winners of a tourney get trophies and not prizes. We're in it for the fun. Drewberry, I'm not directing any of this at you specifically, I just wanted to touch on my and some of the staffer's thoughts about the CSS tourneys (plural..as in the ones EVERY year).
I'm sure you all heard me make a little joke over the mic when I announced "Due to time constraints, the CSS tourney will be 10 versus 10..so find another team and buddy-up." I had planned that little prank about 30 min before it was announced and the fellow staffers were ready to watch the reaction of the groups.
It was absolutely nothing short of comical.
The daggers I got from CSS`ers was priceless. Most responses involved the F-Bomb and looked as if they just found out that their girlfriends were actually their sisters.
Would members of the CSS tourney that were NOT pleased with the way it was ran or had any gripes about it... or gave me daggers during my prank PLEASE respond to this thread and tell me why you take CSS so seriously? Why? I just can't wrap my head around it. I'm serious about having a great time. Not winning. PLEASE share and help us understand how a game can cause SO much negative emotion.
Please lighten up. This is FITES. We're here to have fun. We are not CAL.
-
being a first time attendie i have to say it was awesome. maynot have won as many torneys as i anticipated but going in without a team we did awesome. the players were great. it was ran by some amazing people. they actually like cared about what was going on and talked to the players instead of being A******s. and i came out with a case ive been looking at for about three months now. all in all it was an awesome event and ill be back next year.
- oh and Czar two new sponsors contacted me. and they said they could possibly hop on with you guys also for next year. just an fyi
-voX
-
Yes! Always on the look out for new sponsors. PM me some info?

I did see this post and wanted to offer any apologies where the staff may have made oversights that could have major negative effects on the FITES event. The staff makes every effort to please the group in whole. This requires a ton of planning and many hours of dedication. It's almost a second job. Because of the planning involvement, some details do get overlooked prior to the event. This is why we ask for feedback from the attendees. Feedback gives FITES the ability to review suggestions and adjust where felt required. Unfortunately, we cannot fix everything because there is not enough time and larger issues come to the front. Speaking on behalf of the staff, I truly wish everyone had a spectacular experience and thank you for your feedback. Speaking solely for myself, thank you to all the gamers and staff because you made this LAN enjoyable and a great sense of gratification knowing the fun that was had.

It just seemed like a few staffers were being negative about the effect CSS had on the whole event, how it took longer, the fact that we changed maps after the first final map
I just liked to play, I like to win, I like to be competitive.
Honestly, 98% of the staffers were nice and appreciative and did not have that "high horse" mentality where they think they are above the other lanners.
We had won the previous CSS tourney, and besides the fact that the tournament constraints were weird, it was quite enjoyable, my clanmates felt that this year's CSS was more "work" than the last year, because with 6v6, it was somewhat enjoyable on the "fites" factor.
It just seemed to me like the person running the CSS tourney really just volunteered because he got the short straw of the staff list, and had little idea even about playing CSS, let alone running a tourney.
I really didn't do any talking or lecturing to the staff, because I thought everyone else did anyway. Honestly though, the other rounds besides the final went relatively smoothly, and you guys do a great job working the event
-
I had fun, and thanks for the little memento Czar. I will be sure to keep that staff tag for the next event. From Vin ripping his underwear off and witnessing some bro-mance in the last few hours of the event (Czar knows what I am talking about) it was a event I will definitely remember. I would also like to thank the rest of the 6FR COD4 team. Definitely need to defend the title next year. Sorry about the friendly fire. Really Broken I didn't mean to shoot you in the back of the head.
But on a serious note, it seems that after event I get so messed up the next day. I woke up today with all the muscles in my torso in pain. And somehow I lost the ability to chew my own food today. Most like my damn wisdom tooth. I am really thinking of getting a gaming laptop just so I don't have to lug that black beast around. Not that I couldn't fit it in the car to begin with. I am looking forward to the next one.
-
It just seemed to me like the person running the CSS tourney really just volunteered because he got the short straw of the staff list, and had little idea even about playing CSS, let alone running a tourney.
Posts such as this one is why you have the following from fellow staff members
"It just seemed like a few staffers were being negative about the effect CSS had on the whole event"
Problems which were discussed to the tourney admin (ie issues with the tix rate) were resolved before the event which made it a non-factor for the tournament. Please note however the solutions given were not as simple as suggested (server settings needed to be changed along with the increased MMCSS by running WMP to achieve the 100 tix rate desired). I feel the other issue (the re-ready script after the server glitch in the final) should hardly nullify the entire tournament as a failure which is what you are suggesting. This was the only "major" hiccup that occurred during the entire tournament. Regardless the tourney master should of been made aware immediately (yelling across a 200ft banquet hall in hopes someone hears you does not count) of any problems during the tournament so they can be fixed as they occur (this was in effect and used by the other participants throughout the LAN). Constant negative feedback about the tournament and staff throughout the event directly contributed to the negative outlook FITES staff may of had on the CS:S tournament (fellow attendees were discussing this with us after the event). Discussions with other CS:S participants lead to very positive feedback when asked. I do apologize for the time delay in the finals of the tournament because of the server glitch. It's my hope that we can fix these technicalities to ensure we run a smooth event in the future.

I used to be a CSS god... I have forsaken the CSS universe. I personally refuse to run CSS servers as so many years of doing so has left me jaded and burnt out to the game.
I will say that those running CSS were much more forgiving and tolerant then I, or many of the other CSS tournament admin's I have encountered over the years would have been. I have seen teams DQ'd for less in the behavior, sportsmanship, and conduct department. I am not going to name names, but you know who you are. Count your blessings that the primadonna attitudes were taken in stride and that you had as gracious an admin as you had. In most of the CSS tourneys I have been in over the years, such conduct would have resulted in disciplinary action if not disqualification. Like I said, I wasn't running that tournament and I was there to help, which I did, despite my knowledge of certain individuals behaviors. The CSS format is meant to allow max fun in the time allowed in a different format from CAL or TWL. I would be happy to support more rigid tournament rules for the next event if CSS is on the list, but bear in mind, that I would expect more rigid rules on your behaviors during that tournament as well.
(Drew you mentioned the attitudes in your earlier post, but this isnt directed at you. I am commenting on various remarks I heard in certain locations during the course of the lan. Your post merely reminded me to comment) I am fine with suggestions in the format department, but after what I saw in the behavior of some (again I stress some not all), to see suggestions that the very people being tolerant of the primadonnas were undermining the end game hits a bit close to home. Dont take CSS to seriously or you wont get out alive.
Please Note: These are my personal comments and feelings and do not represent the opinions of anyone other then myself.

OMG people...IT'S......A......GAME.
Quoted for f*cking truth.
-
yep, I should have been a little more clear, the rest of the CSS tourney felt fine, i don't think it was a failure
You guys ran it great last year, I would rate last year a 9 and this year a 6 or a 7 for the CSS tourney
9.5 for the lan as a whole
Again, I am not trying to create any bad vibes, just probably letting you know of stuff that you probably knew about anyway
-
OMG people...IT'S......A......GAME.
Quoted for f*cking truth.
I agree 100% here. I actually participated during the CS:S tournament and while the timing was off (the first round server kill was 3 matches late and the other one was kinda off) I enjoyed myself. Oh and I had my butt pretty literally handed back to me as well as the rest of my team but that's what happens with inexperience. :p
-
.... Regardless the tourney master should of been made aware immediately (yelling across a 200ft banquet hall in hopes someone hears you does not count) of any problems during the tournament so they can be fixed as they occur (this was in effect and used by the other participants throughout the LAN)....
A possible suggestion could be assigning a staff member to monitor each team and act as a proxy between the team and the tourney master. That way a team doesn't have to yell or run across a 200ft banquet hall to get a possible problem resolved or at least heard.
The biggest problem I saw with the tournaments were machine specific. Team members machines crashing or being kicked by PB while in the tournaments . Obviously these issues aren't FITES problems but the participants. What may help a little with this is to have a tourney server(s) up and running public before the tournament running a rotation of the maps used in the tournaments. People could get some practice in on the maps, which helps those of us that don't play every day. And hopefully if would reveal any software issues before the tourney begins.
Overall really no complaints. It was fun. 8)

I tried to email all of you guys to thank the staff, but half the addresses got bounced back. So I will just post it here!
To all the staff and volunteers involved in FITES 2010 LAN... THANK YOU!! This was my first LAN and definitely won’t be my last thanks to all of you. I can’t imagine what it takes to plan, prepare and produce something like this. But every one of you did an amazing job! All of you had great personality and energy that really made this event enjoyable! I am psyched for next year’s party already :2thumbsup:

I encountered some issues with my PC when I arrived back home.
After I set the rig back up, I powered it up and it appeared fine. While the windows Desktop was up, I plugged in my 5.1 surround sound system into my sound card. My speakers nearly exploded and my computer blue screened with this error.
"SYSTEM_EXIT_OWNED_MUTEX"
I quickly killed the power and disconnected the speaker cables. I opened the case up and saw that the PCI lock on my X-FI Extreme Gamer card had released and my sound card was only inserted on one side. Upon reseating the card and reconnecting the cables, I realized that all my speakers were not working correctly.
After two hours of swapping cables and screwing with the 2 Channel/4.1/5.1 selector switch, I realized the extent of the damage.
All the speakers worked correctly, HOWEVER...
When set to 2 Channel, all the speakers emitted sound.
When set to 4.1, only two speakers emit sound (out of 5 and the sub)
When set to 5.1, only two speakers and the sub worked.
Yet oddly enough, my sound card is working, I verified this by trying out the onboard sound card which supports 5.1 and the results were exactly the same. I called Logitech (They were X-5300e sound system). Even though it was out of warranty for over a year, they offered me a 50% discount on their X-5500 system which costs more then 250 dollars more then my original system.
I said f*ck yeah and I'm about to mail them my defunct sound system.

It seems that whenever I bring my pc home from a lan, something screws up. This time, one of my 120mm fans died. First it started with the "wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh"... then it got louder and more scrapey. Then just stopped altogether. Fun!

This lan made my mind up... I am buying a Laptop as soon as one of the new G73Jh-A2's comes into stock on new egg. I am sick of carrying my beast of a machine around. I will just make a screen saver of it for LANS and use the laptop.

You will not!
I'll have some surprises around the corner for some smaller form factor LAN machines... keep an eye on the staff forums.

I'd be nice to replace mine with something that could at least play UT3 on low settings. Mine is barely good enough to play WoW with around 20 FPS. I can still play things like Fable I, Diablo II, Battlefield 1942 on it, which is plenty good enough for me when I'm out and about.
Have any of you attended the East Coast LAN (ECL) that was run for a number of years in Virginia Beach? I used to frequent until it died due to staff infighting. I learned the hard way that I needed to go to great lengths to secure my machine before I left to attend. The FIRMWARE of one of my hard drives was affected.
Despite several reformats, the CPU was locked at 100% usage as long as the Windows was running. I replaced the hard drive and never had that problem again.
-
That's weird. Never heard of that happening before. Of course then again I had a drive that would run with a clean install for 2 weeks and then start producing ran blue screens every now and again. I swapped the drive with a different spare and it worked fine after that. Go figure.

I was wondering if any more pictures of the 200 LAN are going to be posted. I see there is about 85 ATM and was wondering if there will be more.
At the same time, I don't remember as many camera flashes this year compared to last year's LAN.
Year... I hate that word when paired with FITES LAN. It's too looooong! Come on guys, every six months. You can do it :)
-
Come to the monthly LANs! Well, more like bi-monthly, but still. April 17th! Registration is up on the front page, yo.

This lan made my mind up... I am buying a Laptop as soon as one of the new G73Jh-A2's comes into stock on new egg. I am sick of carrying my beast of a machine around. I will just make a screen saver of it for LANS and use the laptop.
You will not!
I'll have some surprises around the corner for some smaller form factor LAN machines... keep an eye on the staff forums.
hmmm you've got my attention!

out of stock... now I have to wait again... grrr...

For what? Are you making a small lanbox for you or for the staff?

I was wondering if any more pictures of the 200 LAN are going to be posted. I see there is about 85 ATM and was wondering if there will be more.
At the same time, I don't remember as many camera flashes this year compared to last year's LAN.
Year... I hate that word when paired with FITES LAN. It's too looooong! Come on guys, every six months. You can do it :)
I just added some more and we have one more batch expected by the end of the week. Yearly.... I know :\ The staff is still pumped from the event and are ready to hold another on a moment's notice. But the amount of planning and pepto-bismol cause this to be a once a year experience.
Agent is right though, c`mon down to the April 17th event. The `monthlies` are a blast. So relaxed, laid back.

I went through the entire album one picture at a time to find the one of me posing with the prizes I won (two). The SDCard reader was the second to last picture... go figure :-D
I didn't realize I looked so freaking miserable in that picture. I still don't see the shot posing with the SLAPPA laptop shoulder bag I won. I know I smiled more in that shot, just hope it isn't horrible! It's my understanding that these pictures get sent to the sponsors.
I wanted to see it since I'm using that bag instead of my backpack for work in school, it's awesome to be able to remove all the extra bags (It's a 4 piece bag that attach to each other) since the extra space isn't necessary.
-
They do get sent but more as proof that we had the event and gave their stuff out. I doubt you`ll be on a promotional poster anywhere.

Someone's red boxers might though...

I'm still pissed that we did not have video of that. Or pics at least. I'd have to put that in my top 3 moments being with FITES! First being Czar giving me a blumpkin and 2nd being catching Rathe and Agent trading man-sauce.

I cant believe I missed it... There is a pic of him hanging them from the ceiling though.
-
That was a great moment. Especially when he handed off the underwear to one of the guys at the table. The guy was a bit apprehensive of course. I missed the man-sauce was one of you would have to discuss that on TS this weekend. But Czar what about the Bro-Mance we witnessed?

Mahoney and I are man-lovers. We shared a bed the night before my wedding. That is all.
