FITES Buy-in Tournament Survey

The idea of this is interesting, though I see two glaring concerns.

First:  The tournament winners seem to be all but decided before the tournament even starts.  For instance, if FITES ever decides to hold another BF tournament (  :angryfire: ) at an event we attend.... I hate to toot our own horn but chances are we're going to win it.  And it just isnt in the case of us with BF.  Doesnt the Rick Flai.... I mean CarlnFriends team always win UT3 and the CS tournaments?  I could be wrong on that, as I dont follow the winners of those tournaments as closely.

Second:  The buy ins  may capture the interests of competitive teams.  That very well may negate my first concern.  However, I come to FITES for the (mostly) laid back casual atmosphere.  Competitive tournaments with cash prizes tend to attract a different crowd.  This is why I dont goto The GXL even though its a fraction of the distance from where I live than Harrisburg.  Perhaps non-cash prizes could prevent this? 

Just my .02 from some simple observations over the years that I've been coming to FITES.  I believe this was our 5th event, 6th is you include that summer LAN that we'd all like to forget ;)

This is also where I shamelessly plug BF3.  The BF3 tournament that FITES ran the first time had 6 teams with 48 people signed up.  1 in 4 people played in that tournament.  The second year when we hosted it there were 5 teams.  Two were us and two were NJLP, but nontheless thats 40 people.  I have my own theories about why the 2nd time wasnt as successful but thats a different discussion.  Either way, in terms of participants they were successful tournaments.  I wish FITES would stop ignoring the game because it has no LAN support.  Unless its a source game it seems there is no LAN support these days.  FITES supports tournaments for other games that do not support LAN servers/matchups.  I bring this up again because BF4 will be out in Oct which would make it ideal for a tournament/event @ FITES 2014 especially considering what we have up our sleeves for that game and the event ;)

Krakah, you bring up some very good points, and I think it's time for a little full disclosure on this.

Everything that's being mentioned here is Planning Phase Only. So don't worry that I am going to destroy the fun and casual LAN atmosphere.

This is a plan to restructure our new "Summer LAN" where we partner with LANFest. I'm testing the waters of rebranding our LANFest event as something more competitive so that it is distinctly different from the FITES LAN in February. The reason is I don't want to have FITES competing with itself to fill seats. By having two events that are essentially the same, with no difference, we run the risk of people choosing one LAN or the other and not getting to our max potential.

To be clear, the February LAN will remain the same FITES LAN that people have always known. There is no fear of that ever changing.

This is an experiment on my part to see if there is something that can be done to get FITES on board with the growing esports scene that would allow us to hold a LAN event, have an open play BYOC area, and still meet our mission as a charitable non-profit organization.

There's a lot to discuss about this plan, and I would love to go over it with you sometime if you are really interested. It's just more to convey than a simple forum post can get across.

As I said, this is in the "planning" and "testing the waters" phase of things. If I find out this plan is feasible and is possible then you can expect a full on media barrage as I try to explain things out to our current LAN audience and work on getting new attendees.

Also, PM being sent about BF3/4 things.

Great reply Krakah and thanks for counter explaining in depth Mahoney!  It makes perfect sense (given the aforementioned growing esports scene) and I'm excited to see how this concept unfolds for FITES.

EDIT: just completed the survey, some choices made me laugh, good form ;)

It was a little less than 1:4 that played in BF3. I started on no team and some how managed to play on 3 different teams during the tournament. I think Mango's played on at least 2 o.O And yes, Mangos and I were the best on our teams even when facing complaints that we would Just sand bag so the rest of Vg could roll.

Yeah, that's right. Mango's and I are good in the suck!

1:4 referred to the first tournament.  From two years ago. 

the one you're referring to was an overall abomination.
